How to Cover Acne with Makeup

Anyone with acne knows how much of a hassle it can be when you’re trying to look good. Many people with acne feel that they can’t wear makeup for fear of worsening their acne. The good news is that, if done right, makeup can be worn without worsening your acne. Not only that, but when applied right, you can give the appearance of flawless skin and help bring out your natural beauty without acne being a distraction. All it takes are a few easy steps:

Keeping it Clean

This may seem obvious, but it’s important to mention nonetheless. Cleaning and moisturizing your face before applying makeup not only makes it easier for your makeup to stay, but it also helps to not irritate your acne and reduces the chance of further breakouts.

Primer

Often overlooked, primers are actually very helpful for those with acne as well as anyone who wants to achieve a flawless complexion with makeup while keeping their skin healthy. Not only does it add a protective layer over the skin but it also creates a smoother canvas for your foundation so that it stays longer and provides more effective coverage. Some companies provide clarifying primers specifically for those with acne. If you want to even out the redness caused by acne, there are primers that are tinted green counteract the redness (don’t worry, they won’t turn your face green).

Foundation

Next is the foundation. Whether you should use powder or liquid depends on your skin type and how it reacts to your skin. If you want to cover your acne, the important thing is to find a foundation that provides a good amount of coverage and is noncomedogenic. If a product is noncomedogenic, it means that it will not clog your pores. When shopping for foundation, be sure to check the label or ask a salesperson if the product is noncomedogenic. If you can, ask for a sample of the foundation before you buy it and test it out for a day. That way you can see how it looks on your skin as time passes, how it looks in different lighting, and how your skin reacts to it.

Conceal

While the foundation will even out the look of your skin and even hide a few of the smaller blemishes, the concealer is what does the heavy duty covering for those more prominent pimples. Find the shade closest to your skin-tone and work your way in gradually.

Powder

To finish it off, use a translucent face powder all over the face. It helps to create matte look and thus getting rid of any shine. It also sets the foundation in place and even out your skin even more.

Viola!

If you want to keep your face from shining as the day goes by, have some blotting paper on hand to blot out the oil. Also, remember to wash your face when they day is done. If you have any questions about certain makeup products or your skin type, its best to speak with your dermatologist. Other than that, all that’s left to do is to enjoy your flawless looking skin and to rock those lovely features that may have been hiding behind your acne.
