Lose a Pound of Fat Each Day—My Favorite Fad Diets and Why They Still Work Great

My personal favorite The Cabbage Soup Diet will take off 10 lbs of fat in 7 days

7 Day Plan. The diet has been around since I was born. I heard that flight attendants use to do this diet before their big weigh in which they no longer do to keep their job with the airlines. I think it is a good cleansing diet for everyone. One of my friends made her husband do it with her and the poor guy didn’t need to lose any weight. He was already thin. He lost 15 lbs in 7 days. Everybody is very different.

Cabbage is an excellent fiber source – it prevents constipation and helps in digestion. It’s also a source of riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, and Vitamins C and B6. Since it has low calorie content, it’s perfect for losing weight. The soup also includes magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium and carbohydrates from the onions and peppers. Here is how it goes. It has been recycled, re-published for 50 years now with slight alterations to it.

Remember: This diet should only be followed for 7 days at a time, with at least two weeks in between.

Day One:

Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

Day Two:

Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.

Day Three:

Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.

Day Four:

Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

Day Five:

Beef And Tomatoes: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomatoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for beef on one of the beef days (but not both).

Day Six:

Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart’s content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.

Day Seven:

Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

6 large green onions (also called “spring” onions)

2 green peppers

1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)

3 carrots

1 container (10 oz. or so) mushrooms

1 bunch of celery

half a head of cabbage

1 package spice only soup mix (In the US, Liptons is a good choice)

1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)

1 48oz can Low Sodium V8 juice (optional)

Season to taste with pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc. (Little to NO SALT!)

Directions:

Slice green onions, put in a pot on medium heat and start to sauté with cooking spray. Do this until the onions are whiter/clearer in color (about 4-6 minutes).

Cut green pepper stem end off, then cut pepper in half to take out the seeds and membrane. Cut the green pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, mushrooms, and celery, cut into bite size pieces and toss them in. Add tomatoes now, too.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

For seasonings, you can use a spice soup packet of your choice (no noodles!) or use beef or chicken bouillon cubes. These cubes are optional, and you can add spices you like instead (make sure not to add much salt, if any at all).

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the 48 oz of Low Sodium V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup simmer for a long time – about 2 hours or until vegetables are tender.

My dad has just successfully lost over 50 lbs and he is still going. The doctor told him just don’t eat white food. I think the doctor meant lay off your white bread, your carbs, your vanilla ice cream your sugars etc. But my dad took him so literally that my dad cringes when he see’s the salt shaker. He also only eats one big meal a day. Anything his heart desires or that his body is craving but only once a day. (I don’t know how he does this). I did not inherit this amazing will power. Now we all know logically this is terrible. It shuts down your metabolism. Keeps you from absorbing certain nutrients, getting the proper amount of fiber and nutrients etc. But there is no question that it has worked for my dad. He is 50lbs lighter, much happier and now needs a new wardrobe. At least Christmas won’t be difficult.

Has anyone tried the Heart Diet? A bunch of my friends at the office got me to try this with them. I think of them now as frienimys. Apparently when you go in for open heart surgery the heart doctors recommend a 600 calorie diet that is ridiculously sparse. (You can google it). It is also out there on the internet.

One of my recent articles on this site included my experience with the HCG Diet. It is the latest hot thing in weight loss. This article has had more hits or page lookers then even an emerging story about “Tiger Woods” the golfer. Human chorionic gonadotropin or (HCG)—What is it and does it work? You give yourself shots of this all natural hormone present in the body during pregnancy. It is suppose to reset your metabolism, make you not hungry and help you burn 2,500 more calories per day. There is a doctor in my neighborhood that has gone from a size 18 clothing to a size 4 in less than one year. The diet again drops you down to 500 calories a day. (This seems to be my problem with almost all fad diets). My experience was 8lbs of weight loss the first week which was pretty amazing, 2 lbs the next because I put half and half in my coffee which is a big no-no and apparently I cost myself 6lbs of weight loss, go figure. On the third week I gave up because I went skiing and taking a needle on Delta to shoot your self in the stomach gets a little tricky.

The Hollywood types are apparently past the HCG Plan and onto the 21-Day Detox is a unique and craving-free holistic detox diet. It has been used by many celebrities, such as Ralph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, and Cate Blanchett. Supposedly the diet claims you can lose 21 lbs in 21 days. I may give it a try. Sources in the tabloids say that Jennifer Anniston is doing the baby food diet. This is the one where you walk around with 6 tiny jars of baby food and up to 10 in your jumbo Prada Purse and you just eat every couple of hours to keep your metabolism up. I always loved my Gerber Baby Food when I was tiny so I may give this one a try as well.

The world watched as 60 year old Kirstie Alley went on Dancing With the Stars as a size 14/16 and now is a size 6. She claims to have kept up the dancing, exercise and to have gone all organic and clean with her diet. I personally have a ton of respect for this woman at her age to do this in such a short period of time. Pictures were shown in the fashion magazines of her at fashion week in New York City and she looked fabulous. Of all the crazy diet ideas Kirstie Alleys idea of cutting calories, going organic, detoxing your system and exercising is the best of all. Good luck Kirstie.
