March 2012 Women’s History Month Events in South Carolina

The United States has observed National Women’s History Month throughout March officially since 1987. It was 1987 when Congress declared the month of March to recognize and celebrate American women and their achievements, and it is demonstrated each year by the issuance of a Presidential Proclamation. The 2012 theme for National Women’s History Month will focus on Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment! The following guide will provide you information for events in South Carolina that will honor women during the month of March. Event #1– Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC: Lunch & Learn

In honor of Women’s History Month, the CCC will dedicate its monthly Lunch & Learn series presented by the Spartanburg Regional History Museum to share snapshots of women from diverse backgrounds in Spartanburg, SC history. The presenter will be Bea Hill, historian and author. She is also the editor of South of Main.

When: March 23, 2012

Where: Chapman Cultural Center West Wing Conference Room @ Chapman Cultural Center (maps, directions, and parking)

Time: 12:30 – 1:30 pm

Cost: $5.00 for the lecture (For tickets in advance call 864-542-2787)

Event #2 – Charleston Carifest Salute to Women « Charleston Carifest 2012

Sponsored by SC Caribbean Culture & Heritage, Inc. this Women’s History Month event will salute women. The presenters will be Jamaica’s author and entrepreneur Nadine Johnson, Ms. Pat Eardley HR Consultant, & Motivational Speaker. Educational, inspiring, and empowering, this is a Women’s History Month Celebration you don’t want to miss if you are in Charleston on March 24, 2012!

When: March 24, 2012

Where: The Runaway Bay Restaurant (map, driving instructions, hours).

Time: 10 am – 1 pm

Event #3 – Greenville County School District -Women in Science

If you want to learn about noteworthy women in the Science field without traveling, visit the link above for Greenville SC County School District on March 1, 2012 and click on the link www.iwaswondering.org. At this site kids will learn about 10 women scientists, be able to ask questions, view a travel timeline and play a related game!

Event #4 – SC State Museum: A Woman’s Light Virtual Exhibit available online now

You can take an online virtual tour of the SC State Museum’s exhibit of a sample of women who were instrumental in the development of South Carolina in fields including education, military, science, medicine, arts and more. Just sit back in the comfort of your home and click on the link above and then choose (click here to enter exhibit.) The exhibit begins with a sample of prominent SC women from the 18th century on through the 21st century.

University of SC: Women’s History Month Calendar | Women’s Student Services have not posted their event for Women’s History Month at present. Check this link frequently for updates.

There will be more events in SC celebrating Women’s History Month, however many have many have not been advertised or posted at present.
