How well does hand sanitizer really work?
Q: Does it really work? Or is it just advertisement saying that it actually kills 99.9% of germs.
A: I’m a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiology course at a large University. Hand sanitizer works well as it contains alcohol which is effective in killing bacteria. It will not kill everything as there are factors involved such as where you applied your hand sanitizer, percentage of alcohol available (some may have evaporated), among others. It is effective however you are always at risk of not killing all the micro organisms from your hand, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Our body naturally has billions of bacteria (bugs) in it and on it. Constantly applying hand sanitizers and using antibiotics will only make bacteria more resistant to these agents as time goes on. To answer the question, yes hand sanitizer’s do work, but perhaps not as well as YOU would like (99.9% effective). Hand soaps can be rather effective if used with water and if you thoroughly rub soap on your hands for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Soaps are surfactants and cause things like lipids (which are in bacterial membranes) to clump together and rinse away.
