Q: I went to the doctor yesterday and she told me I had bacterial vaginosis and she gave me some cream for it (similar to treatment for yeast infections) The directions werent clear on how long to keep it in there, or how soon it would work. When do I know that its cleared up? For some reason I think I should be on antibiotics…will the cream cure it?

A: Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection.Bacterial vaginosis. This type of vaginitis results from overgrowth of one of several organisms normally present in your vagina, upsetting the natural balance of vaginal bacteria. This type of bacterial vaginosis can be treated with Metronidazole (Flagyl, MetroGel) or Clindamycin (Cleocin) as tablets or vaginal gels or creams. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist to prescribe/supply this. It will be effective. If the above medication is effective you should take the following precautions for prevention and recurrance of vaginosis. Advice for treating bacterial vaginosis without pharmaceuticals?
Q: I’ve struggled with terrible bacterial vaginosis symptoms and am tired of being prescribed antibiotics by the doctor that do nothing. Can anyone recommend a program that really works?
A: Try probiotics. You may already know that vaginitis is usually caused by an imbalance of the natural vaginal flora. And you may already know that antibiotic use can create an imbalance. Try replacing the flora. Another way that has helped women is the use of boric acid. You can either purchase boric acid capsule ready-made or make your own. If you opt to make your own, you’ll need powdered boric acid. You can buy it over-the-counter. Use hollow gelatin capsules (which may be purchased at a health food store) and fill them with boric acid. Then, you carefully insert one capsule into your vagina at bedtime for a 2 week period. Also look for other reasons why you can’t resolve this. Maybe your partner is reinfecting you. Maybe you wear an IUD. Maybe you need a different antibiotic. Maybe you need to be cultured to find out exactly what organism is behind this.
