Spironolactone – side effects?
Q: My doctor prescribed the above. Three days ago, about 30 minutes after taking my first 25 mg pill, my left leg began to tighten up and hurt really bad right below my knee to the left side. I thought it was unrelated to the pill, so I took another 25 mg pill the next day, and it got worse. I called the doctor and they finally called back and said to discontinue the pill. I did such, and it has now been 48 hours, and the pain is still there. It is worse when I put pressure on that leg by walking or such. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Do you think this is just a fluke or did that pill cause it?
A: Well without knowing a full history and all the meds you’re taking, it would be hard to say if it’s this specific drug or an interaction between it and others you’re taking. Well a decent hypothesis would be that one of the effects of spironolactone is that it increases the potassium in your body. If you happen to eat lots of food high in potassium (banana’s, tomatoes, potatoes), it could lead to hyperkalemia that would result in muscle pain. It’ll take a little while for the potassium to get back to normal, once it does, the pain should go away.
