Doctors/nurses – question re:Diphenhydramine HCl use?
Q: I take a lot of Benadryl every evening ever since my ezcema got really bad. It makes me very drowsy and I feel bloated and stuffed up. I have looked all over for possible side effects of long term use of diphrenhydramine HCl. I’ve been taking about 250 mg per day for several months now.Is anyone knowledgeable about this? Thanks.
A: The source below discusses antihistamines and their side-effects as well natural alternatives.http://www.healthy-skincare. com/natural-antihistamines.html
Is it okay to use diphenhydramine HCl every night?
A: It is okay so long as you don’t use it with alcohol or other drugs that also promote sleep. Remember benadryl has it to. Also. if there are side effects in the morning like excessive groggyness you might want to cut your dose down or stop taking till you sleep patterns resume themselves.
What is a recommended dosage of Diphenhydramine HCl for use as a sleep aid?
Q: I purchased generic “Sleep Relief Softgels” from CVS which contain 50mg of Diphenhydramine HCl in each capsule a few months ago. I originally purchased them to regulate my sleep cycle and only used them for a few days. Following these few days, I stupidly threw away the box. Once again, my sleep cycle has gotten off track, and although I feel tired, I cannot seem to fall asleep. I would like to take these as soon as possible, but since I have thrown away the box, I am not sure what a safe or practical dosage is. As I said, each capsule contains 50mg each of the active ingredient Diphenhydramine HCl. I am not sure whether to take one or two capsules. I would like to fall asleep quickly, but I’d also like to wake up without feeling groggy. How many capsules should I take?Fpm, thanks for your contribution, but since each capsule contains 50mg, this is rather difficult.Inaya G, I know that Diphenhydramine HCl’s primary use is as an antihistamine, but it is also the active ingredient in the majority of nonprescription medications specifically marketed as sleep aids, such as Unisom, etc. Also, this isn’t a chronic problem for me, I usually fall asleep relatively easily. Therefore, getting a prescription of something like Lunesta, isn’t really practical for my situation. Thanks, though, I sincerely appreciate your input.Jules, your answer confused me initially because I wasn’t sure whether to take one or two! After reading on, the extra information you provided was really helpful, so it ultimately helped in my decision. I doubt I will need it for more than 2 days, though; I should be back to normal by this weekend. I take Klonopin on occasion for anxiety, but I’d rather not use it as a sleep aid as I’ve heard a dependency can develop. Thanks, all!
A: I’d only take one. I took just one (50mg) the other night and I woke up really groggy the next day. But, I usually don’t take sleeping pills. The best thing I’ve found as far as the pills go is to take one then wait about 30 mins (for it to kick in) and then take another if needed. This way you don’t take too much. Also, make sure you NEVER take diphenhydramine with alcohol. The best thing I’ve found is Yogi Tea Bedtime Tea or Kava Relaxation Tea. I got them at Smith’s and they really seem to help me sleep. And they are all natural so they don’t make me groggy. Another thing you can try is warm milk with a little honey.I hope that helps! :]
