Stillwater Plans Breast Cancer Awareness Ride

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the color pink will be glowing in many places at many activities.

In addition to the many runners participating in the Susan G. Komen Races for the cure and the walkers taking part in various marathons and 5ks, bicyclists will be taking to the roads as well.

Trek, a popular company name among bikers, will host the 6th Annual Trek Women Breast Cancer Awareness ride in many locations around the United States.

The rides take place on Oct. 8.

However, the breast cancer ride in Stillwater, Oklahoma will be held on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.

Mary Cash, Cooper’s Bicycle Center, said two rides will be offered both beginning at 2 p.m. at the shop located at 220 South Main Street.

The 25 mile ride is considered to be for the advanced rider and consists of a route that circles Lake McMurtry and back to Coopers.

The second ride offered is an in town casual ride.

“Riders can ride as little as two miles or up to 10 miles,” Cash said. “It is very casual and family friendly where as the other one is considered a tougher ride.”

This is the sixth year that Coopers has hosted a breast cancer awareness ride.

Participants are asked to pay a $25 registration fee.

“The shop will open at 1 p.m. and riders can register then or registration is under way now at the shop,” Cash said. “Online registration will open soon at www.reddirtpedalers.org”

Cash said the group’s goal is to raise $5,000 and all funds are given to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Since the ride is considered a Red Dirt Pedaler Club event, helmets are required and participants are asked to wear pink shirts.

Non-participants may also donate to breast cancer awareness at Coopers.

Cash said prizes will be available and drawings will take place.
