Why can’t pregnant women use a hot tub?
Q: Is it because of the heat? The reason why I ask is because my spa’s temperature is lower than most. Much cooler than my bath water, for sure. There’s not a themometer, but I’d say it’s about room temperature.I’m dying to get in, but of course I don’t want to do any harm to the baby. But if the only reason they advise you not to use it is because of the heat, I really don’t see how it could hurt anything…. being as cool as it is.
A: It won’t hurt a thing.I answered a question about hot baths the other day with the following, some of which might be of interest? A normal bath? Yes.Try taking your temperature before and during a bath if you’re concerned or curious. You’ll find it barely goes up, if it all, in a normal tub bath with normal hot water.Ignore the scare-mongering to the contrary. So far as I know, one ill-conducted study showed a slightly elevated risk of miscarriage among hot tub users.* Hot tubs, not people who wash their hair in the tub every morning. And an uncontrolled fever during pregnancy can have ill effects on the foetus. Out of that, we got saddled with “baths will kill ur babby!!!” hysteria. Groundless. Mindless.Note, too, that nobody outside of Yahoo! Answers crazies outright bans this stuff: “The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest sauna use of no more than 15 minutes and hot tub use of no more than 10 minutes.” http://health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/tn9082*NB: “The findings don’t definitively link hot tub use to miscarriages. Instead, they only imply some sort of connection exists.” http://www.rhtubs.com/pregnancy.htm
Why can’t pregnant women get in a hot tub?
Q: how does it affect the baby?
A: Protiens are the building blocks of life. Think of an egg, and what happens when the egg hits a hot pan. Heat denatures, or changes, protiens. Thats why the egg white turns white and hard, the structure of the protien is changed by heat. The proteins used to build your baby can also be changed by heat. You do not want a scrambled baby. Also, later in development rememebr your baby can not sweat to cool off, like you can. Think of what happens to an infant left in a hot car. Then think of that infant also not being able to sweat to cool itself even a little. Bad to worse. Those are the reasons a pregnant mother should avoid high temp situations such as hot baths, saunas and hot tubs. A rule of thumb is to not be in anything you wouldnt put and infant in. You wouldn’t put an infant in a hot tub, would you?
Can a Pregnant woman get in a hot tub?
Q: i have a hot tub and i am just a few weeks pregnant. Would it be safe for me to do so? My thermometer reads 100 degrees but it doesn’t feel that hot. Please let me know so i don’t make a huge mistake
A: The reason why they tell you not to . . . . Because to keep your core temp from over heating your body pumps all the blood from your core to your extremities. This results in the baby having inadequate oxygen supply. I would turn it down a degree or two then it probably wouldn’t hurt to get in but I wouldn’t stay in for more than 10 -15 min and that’s if it was turned down.
