Q: I don’t have HPV (don’t know why I feel the need to defend that to strangers) but I just anwered a question, uninformed, about it. Actually one of my best girlfiends also had a baby about 2 years ago and she found out this year that she has HPV, she doesn’t know if she had it when she was pregnant cuz she changes boyfriends, but her son was adopted, is he at risk for developing HPV, is a baby girl at higher risk? Can it be avoided by giving birth C-section?

A: HPV can be passed from a mother to her baby during birth if the mother has genital warts at the time of delivery. HPV is a DIRECT skin to skin contact disease. When the baby comes through the birth canal during birth it can come into contact with the genital warts and can contract HPV. A baby that is exposed to HPV very rarely develops warts in the throat or voice box.If the mother had genital warts at the time of delivery a C-section can be preformed to prevent the baby from contracting the virus. If the mother is NOT having an outbreak of genital warts then it is perfectly fine to have a normal vaginal birth. Of course it is always important to tell your doctor if you have a STD or think you have one when you become pregnant. But, since you were diagnosed after your child was born and you were unaware you have the virus then this really can’t apply to you. If you do become pregnant again though, it’s a good idea you let your doctor know you have HPV. Take care!http://www.cdc.gov/std/STDFact-STDs&Pregnancy.htm
