Q: I had sexual intercourse a day before my period, with a condom which broke. I am on birth control and have taken it every day. My normal time to take it is at 11 in the evening. I forgot one day, and took it as soon as i woke up. The next couple days I took it a bit later than 11, but went back into my routine on the 4th day. How likely is it for me to get pregnant? Thx. Melissa
A: Very, very, very slim. Women ovulate 14 days before their period starts, not the day before. Plus you’re on the pill. I don’t think you have any reason to worry.

Q: Hypothetically speaking, I’m not having sex nor do I plan to…I’m only fourteen & I’m waiting until marriage-just curious..I’ve seen the question around and I want a real, true answer.Like, if they used a condom. And It didn’t break. Is there a chance? If it had broken…is the chance lower or higher because she is fixing to start her period?
A: A menstrual cycle starts with bleeding, then there is a time when a hormone called follicle stimulating hormone acts on your ovaries to cause some eggs to mature. Another hormone, called luteinising hormone, then allows (normally) one egg to break out of its follicle (the other eggs that were maturing normally stop developing and don’t ever get released). This is ovulation. The time between ovulation and your next period is called the luteal phase. On average, a luteal phase last for 14 days. The egg only lives for about 12 – 24 hours after ovulation, so you need to have sex before or right around the time of ovulation to get pregnant. Unless a woman has a very short luteal phase (anything less than 10 days is known as a luteal phase defect and would effect her chances of maintaining a pregnancy) she is NOT likely to ovulate in the two days before she gets her period. The chances are VERY low – but unless you know when you ovulate, there is a risk of pregnancy if you have sex at any time.At the earlier end of the cycle, because sperm can live for 5 days (and in some cases up to 7) – you can get pregnant from sex you have on your period or the few days after it. The chance of pregnancy at this time is higher than just before your period.
