Q: Im taking one caplet a day, and it has 400 mcg. But i read that pregnant woman should take 800 mcg a day, that is, two pills. Is that true? how much folic acid should my prenatal tablets contain??
A: 400 mcg is fine – it is what is recommended by Canada Health Guidelines for pregnant or TTC women. However, if you have a family history of Spina Bifida or any other neural tube defects, it would be beneficial for you to speak to your doctor about a prescription for a higher dosage. That is what I had to do because of my family history… brother and cousin with Spina Bifida. I am 30 weeks pregnant and baby is heathy according to all testing! By the way, the neural tube closes by the sixth week of pregnancy, so these next two weeks can be crucial for you and your folic acid intake. Good luck!
I am pregnant and I have MTHFR, how much folic acid, B-12 & B-6 should I be taking?
Q: I have done research that says pregnant women with MTHFR should be taking extra folic acid and B vitamins. I am already on blood thinners to prevent clots I am just not sure about the vitamins. I am also taking a prenatal vitamin once a day.
A: 5mg of Folic Acid50g of B6500mcg of B12You should be taking these daily regardless of whether you’re pregnant or not. I’m a little worried your doctor doesn’t have you on these already. They can give you a prescription (folgard) that contains all of these together in one pill. On top of the B vitamins and blood thinners, you should also be taking the prenatal vitamins. The prenatal vitamins themselves are not enough. Those are in addition to what you normally take and normally your doctor should have you taking folgard, or some generic form of it daily.Good luck with your pregnancy, I wish you the best of luck.
