Q: I am pregnant 6 weeks, I am having a horrible toothache!!! I have been using Orajel off an on when the pian comes back, but it feels like it hurts worse when I use Orajel. Does anyone or has anyone else had the same problem? I am really in dire pain, I have had no sleep in 2 days and I need some remedy that has been proven to be safe and reliable for a pregnant woman. PLEASE HELP ME :0(

A: If the pain is caused by tooth decay or an abcess, orajel will not help at all. The very best thing to do is call your OB/GYN FIRST. He may want to consult with a dentist and get you on some antibiotics. No dentist will treat you without the express consent of your obstetrician, so that’s why you should start there. Decay can lead to infection,which, in turn, could affect the baby, so it is better to get it taken care of rather than live with the pain for your entire pregnancy. There are safe medications to take and safe dental treatments….but again, it will take coordination between both doctors.Since it is Saturday, you may have to take a trip to the ER for care. If you do that, be SURE they call YOUR obstetrician. Don’t take the word of the “on-call” doctor or attending physician. Your doctor knows you best and he will be the one you deal with through your pregnancy. Don’t take no for an answer…..be nice, but be firm.Best of luck to you!!

Another Tooth Ache Question…?

Q: Okay, I know I’ve asked quite a few questions about toothaches the last couple days…but here is one more. I’m 5 weeks pregnant and was in the E.R. yesterday (O.B.’s orders) because my tooth was hurting so bad. It turns out I have a very bad infection due to a filling falling out. AND my wisdom tooth is trying to push that same infected tooth out of the way. So ya…pretty painful. The E.R. told me they can not prescribe me any PAIN medication because of the baby. So they gave me Antibiotics to help the infection. Meanwhile, I’m still in pain, Tylenol, Orajel or Ambesol do not work. I was to follow up with my dentist today, but, my dentist informed me they do NOT SEE PREGNANT WOMEN. So ya…i’m pretty screwed. Its the only dentist who accepts my insurance. I live in a very small town. Nobody even outside the town accepts it. I pretty much have to wait until the baby is born. Any ideas on other remedies I can use for pain to not go nuts during the next 8 months????Tracy – I am very shocked to hear that my dentist won’t even SEE me during my pregnancy. I broke into tears and everything speaking to the lady who answered the phone. I am soooo furious!!! MY OB won’t see me until I am 8 weeks, so I have a few weeks to go. I am going to try to hold out until then and ask him. Thank you so much for the ideas! I’m going to try the salt water! The pain is subsiding a little bit with the antibiotics, but still very rough. 🙁 It was a bad infection…I just hope the baby is okay! I’m so worried about it….Miami Lilly – Love the name! I wish I could take Motrin but I am VERY VERY allergic to it. LOL. My lips swell up like a duck! I did ask the doctor just to pull it, I didn’t care about the tooth anymore and they told me NO. Ugh. 🙁

A: Motrin is really the best pain reliever to take since it’s an anti-inflammatory. And it is safe to take the first 2 trimesters of pregnancy. (You can safely take 800 mg.) Just avoid it like the plague the last 3 months.The good news is once the infection clears up, the pain will probably lessen too, so hang in there.Geez, if we lived in Canada, they would just pull your tooth, and send you home..

A: 1. talk to your OB2. ask the dentist why they don’t see pregnant woman (mine does)3. call another dentist to find out how much it will be.. if its an emergency.. you may have no choice. Explain the problem your having.. the insurance, dentist wont take you etc. 4. From my experience getting a tooth pulled is VERY cheap.. even without insurance… (under 100 bucks)5. and, you can talk to your OB about pain medication that is SAFE while pregnant (yes, there is some that are safe.. talk to your OB)DO NOT wait until your baby is born.. i made the same mistake and it caused WAY more harm on my mouth and teeth than going and getting my one tooth taken care of in the beginning of pregnancy. not to mention having a sore tooth during labor SUCKS
