questions about making sure I’m ready..healthy enough..?
Q: I’m not trying to conceive at the moment, but we (my husband and I) are thinking of trying in a couple of years, and my period is late so there may be no trying involved. Anyways, for those good moms out there, did you prepare before you tried to conceive? Any healthy tips? I plan to get on some vitamins, i’ve heard eating fish WHILE pregnant is bad, at least in big amounts. I’m also planning to get rid of soda entirely. Is there anything wrong with Sprite though? I mean it says it has no caffeine. I just want to make sure when we are ready that I am as healthy as I can be. I mean things can still go wrong, but..I want to try to be healthy. Any suggestions health-wise? Btw: I don’t smoke, drink, or do drugs so no worries there.ok maybe I need to clarify. Anyone have any advice or suggestions that actually makes a bit of sense??thanks, Tink, for an answer that actually makes sense! I’ll do that. 🙂
A: You should schedule a preconception appointment with your OB-GYN. They will give you a pap/exam and take your medical history to clear you for TTC. You should treat your body as if it were already pregnant – no smoking, limit alcohol, take vitamins (esp. folic acid). Soda pop is fine in moderation. Sprite has no caffeine so it’s a-OK. Drink plenty of water and limit caffeine intake. If you are over or underweight you might want to remedy this as it may help with conception and decrease the risk of complications during pregnancy.Good luck for when you decide to start trying!
What is the only thing that settles your stomache when you have the flu?
Q: I’m 32 weeks pregnant and woke up yesterday morning thinking morning sickness was back and it actually turned out to be the vomiting/diarrhea flu. Yay. I can’t keep down water, ice, warm tea, gatorade, nothing! Sprite is my next try but I’m thinking that might hurt coming back up. I haven’t gotten sick in about 3 hours and my stomache still hurts but feels a little better if that makes sense. I can actually switch sides without having to switch back to the side next to the trash can. What settled your stomache if you had morning sickness or the flu while pregnant? PS if I have gotten sick say 10 different times multiple times each, would it be normal for my chest to hurt? 🙁 Its just one thing after another. Thanks for your answers.Yeah nothing settles my morning sickness either. But these last 14 hours (yes I’m counting!) have been the worst 14 hours of my life and I’m running out of drinks in our house lol. Should I still try water even though I got sick last time?
A: You must keep at least sipping the water, or an electrolyte solution. If it stays down for at least ten minutes you are still getting benefits from it because water is absorbed directly through the stomach wall. Dehydration is not something to mess with, especially while pregnant. My little girl was just hospitalized last week due to Metabolic Acidosis from moderate dehdration. My son, daughter and husband all had viral gastroenteritis, poor little bean got hit the hardest, and my husband was really sick as well, the goober lost 12 lbs (I say goober because I know weigh more than him!). So, wait until at least 15-30 minutes after vomiting and then start sipping water- 1 oz every 5 minutes. That should give your tummy time to rest. We also use popsicles, I have breyers fruit juice ones with no added sugar, and pedialyte oral rehydration solution pops. Those and ice chips help stave off dehydration. When you get to 4 hours without vomiting you can start slowly increasing the amount of liquids you are taking in. I would wait for at least 5-6 hours and then try some toast, saltine crackers, rice or mashed potatoes. I hope you feel better soon! And please call your doctor if you show any signs of dehdration.
