Is It Really So Hard To Take Responsibility? *It’s long, sorry*?
Q: When people get a pet (cat or dog) and either choose not to spay or neuter and then their pet becomes pregnant, is it really so hard to take responsibility and do the right thing by the puppies or kittens?Several years ago I got a cat from my aunt. I loved her dearly and somehow her first heat cycle caught us off guard. Honestly, she never showed any signs (yowling and anxiousness) and we didn’t know (otherwise she would have been under lock and key). But she got pregnant. My mom was not happy (she is a firm believer in “Don’t breed or buy while shelter pets die”), but I was so excited. So I was immediately on the internet and reading books about feline pregnancy, whelping and researching what could go wrong (then is when I started to worry about her), what to look for when she went into labor, what kind of housing she and the kittens would need. I looked up what my mom or I might need to do if she had complications (being young and a first time mommy she might not take care of them correctly). I was set and prepared WEEKS before she was due. And I was only in the fifth grade. After she gave birth to five beautiful babies (complication free thankfully) we took care of them properly, though I will say they didn’t see the vet like they should have, but they were all healthy and thriving. And when the time came, we looked for good homes. We found three of them homes where they were loved and cared for, but for the two that we couldn’t find homes, we didn’t ship them off to a shelter so they wouldn’t be our problem, we kept them. Because it was OUR fault they were born, we took responsibility for them.So I really want to know, why people who know what having an intact animal can entail, will refuse to step up? Why can a nine year old do research before a pregnancy, thus being prepared for it, but adults can’t? I just don’t get it.I’m hoping some people out there who have abandoned the animals their mistakes and choices created will answer and tell me why it’s so hard.I happen to know they were good homes because family friends were the ones who took them I know that one has unfortunately passed prematurely and I know the other two are doing well. We did not and would not put an ad in the paper or pass them out in a parking lot. I couldn’t sleep if I didn’t know where they were and if they were okay.
A: Hey i really am a responsible pet owner like yourself! I mean i research all sorts of things, even when my parents got me a rabbit i researched exactly what i needed to do, living requirements etc. Even when my cats were ill, i researched a lot into its symptoms and even the vet was surprised i knew it because i was so young! I don’t understand why adults cannot be just as responsible as us kids!
