I have a hard time remembering dreams and the dreams that I do remember are very uninteresting. Any thoughts?
Q: I have a few questions about dreaming. The short version is that I usually don’t remember any of the dreams I have. I can sometimes go weeks without remembering a dream. Now, I’ve tried taking measures to help remember more dreams. I’ve tried waking up after multiples of 90 minutes. I’ve tried writing my dreams down and I found that it does help somewhat. However, as I said to a friend in a recent discussion, if I want to remember dreams, I really have to put a lot of effort into it. I can do it for a few weeks at a time, but it actually takes a lot of planning and I eventually give up. Is there anything else I can do to help remember my dreams? My other question is about the dreams that I do remember. They’re boring. Nothing interesting ever happens in my dreams. I never have nightmares. My dreams often involve a lot of things from my everyday life. Is there any significance in this and is there anything I can do to make my dreams a little more interesting? Thanks for the help!Just a quick clarification (and I’m pretty sure this has something to do with the problem). I’m a really heavy sleeper. Once I fall asleep, 99 times out of 100, I won’t wake up in the middle of the night. I almost always sleep straight to the alarm clock. Does this mean that the only dream I remember is going to be the last one I had before waking up?
A: This is a good article about dreaming. It mentions having a notebook and pen near your bed to write down your dreams as you wake up and pep talking to yourself before you go to bed, saying, “I will remember my dreams”Hope this helps you.
How can you force yourself to remember dreams?
Q: That, or even just having some control of them. As crazy as it seems, I love having those weird dreams that make no sense whatsoever, but I rarely every get them/remember them! Are there any secrets or something about dreams?
A: I try to either write them down right away or backtrack through it until I remember all the details, sort of like trying to go back through what you did all day when you were awake. I’ll focus on the one little thing I remember, like “red car” or something and obssessively think about it. Then later something will trigger a memory like a flashback (like the word “ice” in a conversation) and I stop everything I’m doing and focus on it. It slowly starts coming back and I piece it together. If i write it down immediately chances are I won’t remember it later. I have found dreams that I wrote down and I seriously do not remember dreaming it or writing it. And they’re usually crazy sounding. I close my eyes after I wake up and lay there half awake remembering feelings, sounds, images, etc.Hope some of these techniques work. I’m currently helping my hubby start to remember his dreams since he never has before either. We tell each other our dreams in the morning right when we wake up.
