A: Personally, I just focus on my breath, because it is firmly rooted in the moment. It seems to work well for me, but there are many, many different possible methods. A common technique is gazing at an object (often a candle flame, but also often a picture of a deity or someone revered. This is called trataka in Sanskrit. Another common method is chanting mantra. Q: look im a stressed out person and id like to take up meditation….were do i start
A: If you are a beginner I would suggest guided meditation. I got an audio tape from my local library called ‘Learn How to Meditate’ which relaxes you and guides you through meditation. This was the best video I could find on guided meditation, it’s called guided meditation for stress relief, I found it on google videos.http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-8845129782533837583&ei=YSOYSo3lKI3ZlQfH5ZjgAg&q=guided+meditation&hl=en&client=firefox-aI would recommend going to your library though or buying a video or tape off amazon or something. This tells you how to meditate, it’s what I used when I first started.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0rSmxsVHPESometimes I find it helpful to put on some calm music, not only does it relax me but it drowns out any distracting noises e.g. the house phone downstairs ringing or the busy road outside my house. When I am trying to concentrate on my breathing it’s easier to tune out from the music than to tune out from the noisy cars. When I am meditating I begin to feel a tingling all over my body, some people feel tingling on their forehead (third eye). Remember that everyone has different meditation experiences. Good luck!
