Q: I had a dream of several black spiders under my kitchen sink. For some reason, I chose not to kill them but rather suck them up with the vacuum cleaner. There were 3 or 4 though, that I could not reach so I sprayed with poison and killed them that way. What does this mean?
A: Dreams probably have no interpretive significance. During REM sleep, random electrical impulses are firing in your brain. Your brain interprets the emotions triggered by these impulses by making up a story or scenario to which they fit.You are most likely to dream about things you thought about just before falling asleep. Were you thinking about spiders? your sink? your vacuum? Are you particularly frightened of spiders?According to current psychology knowledge, dreams have no particular meaning.

Q: Sometimes, my daughter wakes herself and everyone up at night screaming about spiders in her sleep. She thinks there is one on her pillow or in her bed or climbing up the wall.Sometimes, she stays asleep when she does this and sometimes she wakes herself up looking for the spider on her pillow! She won’t lay back down untill I tell her it is gone or I got rid of it.
A: There are a lot of dream dictionary sites on the web. Have you tried any? I have noticed that on this site “dream moods” is often quoted. I looked up “spiders” on that very site and found a lot of superstitious information among valuable information. The interpretation that got nearest to the truth is the following one, although the dream scenario is not exactly that of your daughter’s:”To dream that you are bitten by a spider represents a conflict with your mother or some dominant female figure in your life. The dream may be a metaphor for a devouring mother or the feminine power to possess and entrap. Perhaps you are feeling trapped by some relationship.”One thing is certain; arachnephobia (fear of spiders) is transferred from mother to daughter. Psychology is agreed upon that much. This fear increases at the onset of puberty. One of the reasons for this is the black and hairy spider’s resemblance to the vagina. Thus arachnephobia is connected with the sexual realm. As puberty awakens a daughter’s sexual awareness a certain sense of competition with the mother also begins to assert itself. The more repressed sexual awareness is, the stronger will be the fear of spiders. In the dream of your daughter the spider does not bite, but it sits on her pillow which means right next to her head. This wants to indicate that the spider energy is trying to dominate her thinking and with that we have come full circle to the interpretation of ‘dream moods’. It would seem that your daughter is feeling repressed by you as the mother. You may not think so yourself, but you will have to look at that first and foremost. A loving discussion about your daughter’s feelings in that sphere may help. It would be a good idea to look at the recurrence of this dream. When did it start and what kind of ‘conflict’ (?) might have arisen between you and your daughter as the first of these dreams surfaced?Perhaps the best thing you can do for the start is allowing your daughter to retell her dream freely and thoroughly. Instead of saying ‘it’s only a dream’. It will prove to be more revealing if your daughter can describe the whole dream and then, once she has done that, discuss the details of it: i.e. where did she see one like it, or where did she read about it, or who had told her scary stories about a spider and so on.Much might be revealed during such a discussion. If nothing is actually brought into the light of day, at least the telling of the dream, and indeed the retelling of the dream will allow her to face that fear which will change the dream scenario possibly for the better. If it should eventuate that this dream is connected sexually it would be important to have a discussion of things sexual in order to free your daughter of some of the oppressive facets that sex seems to bring into our lives.
