Q: Okay, this is weird I get a strange reaction to blood and things, my right hand goes completely.. sort of numb, and I can’t grip things, and it shakes a little too, I don’t know what it is, but it only happens when I see someone get a cut, or thinking about it, or sometimes watching programmes about anatomy, because a while back in science, we were watching this video about transplants, and I couldn’t for anything take any notes because my hand went strange.I just wonder what it is because it has been really bothering me lately, as I’ve never really suffered from Hemaphobia, and I wonder is it part of the phobia?

A: I am going to be honest with you. I was doing similar work at age 14, in oil, of horses. The market for amateur equine art is very dependent on where you are and who is buying. I would suggest you enter it in as many shows as you can find that have categories for artists in your age bracket. A 12 x 16 could be priced in the $200-400 range. There are a couple of compositional issues with your painting, however, that may hinder it. The horse is smack dab in the center of your canvas. For a better composition I suggest you follow the rule of thirds, dividing your canvas into 9 rectangles and placing the main object of focus along one of the lines dividing the canvas like this: http://www.mikeatkinson.net/tutorial-images/t6/13-Rule-of-thirds.jpg I think part of the pacement issue is that your hose is looking off the canvas to the left, as even turning his gaze toward the viewer draws the focus to the upper left third of the painting like this: http://artisanne2000.com/images/crown_point.jpgYour horizon line is exactly on center horizontally. A little higher or lower would make a more pleasing composition. Raising the horizon will give the feeling of greater distance to the piece, and lowering it will give the feeling of being in close and looking up at the figure. Your colors are a little saturated. The trees in the distance should be muted, even greyed a bit to give them atmospheric distance, and in fact, there could be more of them, even extending behind the horse. And the grass should be a cooler or more muted green as it recedes and warmer as it is closer. The horse leads our eye right off the left side of the painting. You want your viewer to stay in your painting and have plenty to “study” before they walk to the next work in a show. Right now the painting says “Yup! I am a brown horse standing under a plain sky with grass and trees.” Another group of trees, a fence or building, or some object or change on the left side of the canvas is needed to bring the eye back to the horse. The horse is well painted but reads slightly out of proportion. The legs are quite short for such a stout neck and chest. The highlights are good, but the shadow under the horse implies the light comes from above, not behind us as the “shine” indicates. You show a lot of skill, however there is more to painting a piece that will sell than just reproducing the object well. Equine art often consists of a basic horse portrait, which your painting is. A little movement and context of the horse would help tell more of a story, and help generate interest in it beyond just the horse. Use of a little more color, such as paying attention to warm and cool colors with relation to sunlght and shadows would give it more interest and unity as well. And realism depends on good composition of values shapes which help lead the viewer around the canvas so they will take note of the different treatments and passes you have made in color, line and brushstrokes. You have a good start. I would spend a little time reviewing the basics of composition, brush up a little on color theory and keep painting! Don’t expect to cover your tuition on this one painting. For student art of this quality I would expect you could get $100-300 with the right buyer.
