A: I see a community mental health nurse and this is what she has told me.Mindfulness- focus on something, take the trees for example. What colours are they, can you hear the birds, can you see any birds or nests? This will take your mind off any thoughts from the past and worrying thoughts or the future this will help you focus on the here and now. You can do this with anything, if you are feeling anxious at school/work focus on something and see what you can actually see. You can do this by looking at a wall!! lol does the wall have any cracks or chips in the paint? Has any of the colour faded! Sounds silly but it does work.Another thing is breathing techniques, breathe in for 3 seconds and then hold it for 3 seconds then breathe out for 3 seconds. Keep doing this and focusing on your breathing. This will also relax you while stopping you worry about any other thoughts.Good luck

I have an exam tomorrow morning. Should I go home now or just relax & free my mind?
Q: I have a Spanish translation exam tomorrow online @ 9:30 AM. I’ve been preparing since January, but I’m still not prepared because of many stress-related issues that got in the way. I’m wondering if I should just go home & cram-study (I don’t necessarily have to STUDY since I can bring dictionaries & resources with me), stay here @ the university library, chill & relax until they close, or go home ASAP & get a thorough night’s sleep?I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep because this is an anxiety-inducing situation, & I’ll be up all night with insomnia, worrying & ruminating. I’m SO tense right now.
A: You could go home and relax for a while and then study the areas you are still unsure of. Once you are at home, you will not have to go home. That will be one less thing you will need to do. If you have been studying since January, you must be more prepared than you realize. I hope you will be able to feel comfortable while taking the exam. Keep some treats to nibble on while taking the exam. Good Luck on your exam.
