How do you deal with a child’s extreme fear of dogs?
Q: My niece and nephew are TERRIFIED of dogs, so much that it’s becoming irrational and they are missing fun times with the rest of the family. We have two non-aggressive breed dogs- one who absolutely loves people and one who runs and hides from most guests. Even though the dogs were in the backyard, my 9 yr. old niece refused to even get out of the car in the front yard. Finally, once in the house, she chose to hide in the bathroom 70% of the time she was here, though the dogs were outside the entire time. Her mother left and as though to spoon feed her, assured her she “could call anytime if she needed to”. Nothing happened with the dogs, but having that “out” to call in a so-called crisis (my exaggeration…sorry), she ended up leaving the party after a few hours. It’s extremely debilitating, and I don’t find it normal to kennel my dogs at the vet whenever she comes over. Her mother simply makes excuses for her and I feel has only helped escalate the situation further. I find it sad that she cannot be comfortable in my home, and especially because she is missing out on all the fun.Is it just me, or is accommodating her every fear only making it worse? I personally would have said, “Goodbye honey, Daddy & I will see you in the morning”, and given her some independence to experience the reality of the situation! She was in good hands for heaven’s sake! Arg!!!!!
A: They’ll grow out of it, child are scared of a lot of things, but eventually, they get over it. 🙂
