- Why do people cut themselves when they are depressed?
- Q:
- A: They do it partially for attention, but not always and not all of them. For the most part, they do it to feel something again. Part of depression – the clinical disorder – is the lack of feeling, motivation and emotion. They also tend to blame themselves for the way they are, and concentrate only on the negative things that are happening to them. Cutting gives them two things – it’s a form of punishing themselves, and it’s a way to know that they are still alive (because when they feel nothing, and nothing makes them happy or excited anymore, they wonder: am i still here? am i still alive?) seeing themselves bleed and feeling the pain gives them something to feel when they cannot otherwise. It becomes addicting. They see the scars later and they may regret it, but they can’t stop, because they’re now dependent on the pain and the sight of the blood to help them feel.People who cut themselves 95% of the time are not suicidal and do not want to die. They want to live and to feel, but their brain is not letting them.
