Bitter Sweet Memories

Every Christmas when I was a little kid I remember trying to stay up for as long as I could so I could catch Santa. Eventually I figured out how the presents were getting under the tree. Lately with how everything has been going with the economy I’m not a huge fan of Christmas anymore. My little brother (age 9) gets a huge amount of presents. It astounds me how much money my mom throws away for this holiday!

Now mind you my mom runs her own Dog walking Business. She gets tipped very well for visits during the holidays. I remember I did too when I used to walk for a local dog walking company. I’m fairly humble when it comes to the gift giving. I will always hand make something for the people closest to me because honestly I love them. And what better thing to give them then something I made just for them. But that all really ties into me wanting to be green and not waste things.

I remember one year my grandmother broke down into tears because she couldn’t afford to get gifts for anyone. She literally started to bawl and she wouldn’t take the bath set we got her. Quite funny actually how people get upset on holidays over the most trivial things. Holiday is now to buy and get people what they want. Even if they didn’t even really deserve anything.

With the strange snow storms happening on the east coast (Hello snow in October!) it’s hellish to get around. It’s the one thing people start to talk about when the snow starts to hit. “Man the roads are going to suck where I live!” The snow in Cross Junction was even worse in my opinion. If you got stuck you’d have to wait and hope someone with a strong enough truck could help get your car pulled out.

Everyone I know worries about spending money on giving a gift to their loved ones. When shouldn’t Christmas be more about spending time with your family? Is it supposed to be an excuse for everyone to spend money on each other? Not likely in my book. I miss how in Christmas movies the main point was not the gift you were getting but bringing your family together to celebrate with you.

I guess all and all my hope is that people start taking the time to get to be better acquainted with their friends and family because we have no idea how much longer we have on this planet. We can never truly gauge or map out the events in our life. At anytime things could just be gone like the blink of an eye.
