Shop Thrift Stores for Bargains on Clothing, Books and More

Thrift stores are a great place to find many items such as clothing, books, and much more. It’s a way to save a lot of money, while at the same time, supporting a worthy cause, as most thrift stores give the proceeds to charity or other worthy organizations. Popular thrift chains such as Goodwill, use the money they make to help people with barriers that may keep them from finding. They help them to acquire gainful employment.

A local thrift store in my area uses its proceeds to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence, and another gives their proceeds to several Catholic charities. Thrift stores can be a way to help yourself as well as others.

There is so much quality clothing to be found at thrift stores, at a fraction of the cost you’d pay if purchasing new. Many times people will donate items still new with tags attached. I have also noticed popular retailers donating to Goodwill stores, with items such as clothing, shoes, and purses. These are brand new, never worn items, at rock bottom prices. Women may even find designer label evening gowns and other upscale clothing, even wedding gowns and prom dresses at thrift stores.

Halloween costumes are a great buy as well, as most are only worn once or twice, then discarded, or in this case, donated. For men and young boys, suits are a great find at thrift stores. If you need some nice dress pants or a suit jacket that your teenager will only need for one or two occasions, this is the place to go. You can find ties, belts and other accessories as well. Think of all the money you’ll save by buying something gently used, instead of going out and purchasing a brand new suit that your child will wear for all of three hours.

Book are another great find at thrift stores. There are usually a lot of popular children’s titles available, for very low prices. I am also able to find my favorite contemporary authors, in hardcover and paperback, for extremely reasonable prices.

Furniture is another great find at thrift stores, although, you might want to think twice about purchasing a fabric covered item. I would recommend thoroughly examining anything made with fabric, checking for ripped, frayed, or burned areas, and I would definitely recommend cleaning it before bringing it into your home. My concerns with upholstered items would be that they previously belonged in a smoker’s home, or pet owner’s home, which are concerns for people with allergies. Just use good common sense when considering an upholstered piece. I have encountered beautiful pieces at thrift stores, such as china cabinets, decorative buffet tables, armoires, and book cases. If only I had room in my car to transport them, and room in my house to display them!

Keep your eyes out for hidden treasures. Thrift stores sometimes receive antiques and unusual finds. I once happened upon an antique sewing machine with cabinet that I would have jumped on if I’d only had a place to display it. I’ve also been in a Goodwill once where the store worker was placing items on the toy shelf, and she had several limited edition Barbie dolls, still in boxes, great for collectors.

You get the idea now. Thrift stores are a great savings on items you use daily, and you may even encounter something extra special. Check out your local thrift stores. More seem to be popping up every day. You’ll be helping yourself by saving money, while at the same time, helping others in your community.
