Q: Can an abscessed tooth/teeth if you have had it long enough contribute to tiredness, allergies etc?
A: Yes! A tooth abscess is a collection of infected material (pus) resulting from bacterial infection of the center (pulp) of a tooth. The infection results in a weaker immune system thus not allowing the body to protect itself. Also, an abscess of the tooth can result in more severe infections to include cerebal abscess. In short, don’t play around with it. This is something that needs to be fixed.
Abscessed Tooth!?
Q: I have an abscessed tooth that has a puss pocket that formed on my gums. I have an appointment Monday to get this taken care of, but the pain of this pus pocket is unbelievable. Is there anything I can do to relieve the pressure? Can I pop this pus pocket to relieve the pressure?
A: Hi! I’ve been in dentistry for over 20 years and this is called a fistula. It typically will break open itself and once it opens it will drain and the pressure and pain will stop temp. You need to rinse often with warm salty water to help remove the infection and help it drain and to keep the infection under control. Typically the tooth needs a root canal or extraction. Only you and your dentist can decide this.If you want to pop the pocket, please wash you hands and very carefully use a sterile needle to do this very gently, it won’t take much to open the skin. Once it drains it will be fine for a few days and start all over, so keep up the salt rinses, the last at night and you should be fine until you see your dentist. You could call and ask if he would recommend an antibiotic at this time and get a jump start on treating the infection before he does a root canal. If you have any other questions, please ask. ~M
