Q: Hi, i’m 15 and i think my left eye is cross eyed!! I dont know the difference between cross eyed or lazy eye but my left eye pupil kinda goes inwards towards my nose.. You cant really notice it (well i think so bcos none of my friends told me my eyes look wierd) and also i wear glasses so maybe thats y its hard to notice.. But whenever i take pictures of myself looking sideways or something i can see that my left eye pupil is really inwards, towards my nose! Yeah you can notice it in pictures but not really real life…Is there anything i can do to help make it normal?? A: Talk with your parents and I would suspect that as a child you had Strabismus. . . Lazy Eye. This has to be addressed before the age of 7yrs old either with patching of the good eye thereby making the “lazy” eye work harder. There is another method where they use dilating drops in the good eye to make the vision of that eye blurry so that your “lazy” eye work harder. Another method is to use a strong lens prescripton to help pull the muscles of the “lazy” eye straight. When all of that fails,surgery is done to either shorten or lengthen (whatever the case may be) the muscle of the lazy eye. At your age,there isn’t anything but cosmetic surgery to straighten the eye.

A: see an ophthalmologist who will do 1 of a couple surgeries to correct it. I have a “lazy” eye(one is inward at times. when i look to the side, one is very far in, and the other is normal), and i’m doing that soon!Good luck!

Why am I cross eyed now?

Q: I’m blind in one eye from an injury several months ago. I had a detached retina and had to have surgery to fix it. My eye healed, but its blind now and it crossed in.. looking at my nose. Why is this?Its not severe, but if you look at me, you can tell I’m cross eyed. What would cause this?

A: Many people have some degree of phoria. Phoria means that your eyes have a tendency to want to turn in or out a little bit BUT you brain overrides this tendency and keeps the eyes straight. If one eye tries to turn in or out even just a little bit, the brain recognizes this and compensates so that the eyes stay straight. In a situation, though, where one of the eyes has lost vision, the brain does not receive information from the blind eye. Therefore, it does not KNOW that the blind eye is turning in or out. The eye that is blind therefore just moves to its normal point of rest. If your original imbalance was slightly inward then the blind eye will move to that position. Hope this helped.
