Lame horse! Is it a tendon problem? How do i treat it?
Q: I have a great little 14.1 hh arab x Australian Riding pony, who i am hoping to event again this season! but he keeps going lame.About this time last year, he started refusing all jumps, after a while we found out he had a rotated pelvis, which is now fixed.about a month and a half ago, i got back from the Interschools Equestrian Nationals, to find the lady that was looking after my horse didn’t notice he had an abscess in his Near fore.It was the biggest abscess i’ve ever seen, and it EVENTUALLY popped out of his heel. It was still full of puss though, so the farrier came and dug out the area on his hoof from where the abscess had travled. He seemed to be walking around his paddock quite well, so i began to bring him back into work. You can’t see it, but in the trot he falls heavily to one side. It’s obvious he is still lame!Because of the abscess, his front hooves have become long and flat. The farrier said she can’t do anything about it.I’m starting to wonder if it might be tendon strains! We live on heavy clay here, and though i pick out his feet regulary, Could it be possible that having long toes, and hooves full of heavy clay is tipping him back on his heel to strain the tendon up the back of his leg? Please help me, i need to get this little fella well again, he’s had a bad run! Here’s a picture of him 🙂 http://i661.photobucket.com/albums/uu333/mini_mouse95/Avoncharisma006.jpg** Farrier has been out three times. We’ve taken him to the vet twice. No luck.Oh i forgot to say, we put his shoes back on, and he seemed alot better after that. His hooves have always been a bit flat, but they were just starting to come right! I don’t understand how we’re back as square one. I’ll give him some bute and call another farrier 🙂
A: Interesting question for me, because I have just finished treating a horse for an abscess which turned out not to be an abscess. She had all the classic signs of an abscess, and even had an eruption through the frog, but while she got some relief after that she still wasn’t fully weight bearing on it. It got worse again, so I took her to the local equine clinic (the local vet had been out half a dozen times, done nerve blocks and xrays, etc.). They felt she might have ruptured her deep digital flexor tendon deep in the hoof. As part of the exam, they tapped her coffin joint, and found it was septic (infected). This could have either been due to the suspected tendon rupture, or it could have been due to a deep abscess. Abscesses take the path of least resistance coming out, and it might have found its way to the coffin joint.Either way, she was in a lot of pain and couldn’t be helped. :(So yes, it could be his tendons. Long toes are never good, and if your horse is having a tendon issue that’s the worst thing for it.An abscess can make a foot flat – the pressure builds up inside and presses down on the sole until the sole flattens – it may even become rounded out. But that would happen only in the abscessed hoof, not the other one as well. I don’t see why both front feet would have flattened.Another thing to consider… when an abscess pops out the heel, it affects the integrity of the hoof more than in other areas. You may have to wait until that part grows out and heals up before he can use it fully without pain.I’d get the vet out, not the farrier, and get their opinion. Good Luck!
my rott got an abscess that was popped.i can see the inside of it already. what can i do. i dont have money :(?
Q: the abscess is big like a one dollar coin. please what are the names of the medicine i can buy for my rott. please help me 🙁 it bore a hole on my rotts back. the whole is bigger than a one dollar coin. how and what will i do? i really need help please help me help my rotty. i didnt know about it until i arrived from a trip. she had this for 3 months already. 🙁 can i also give her a bath? is this contagious?
A: You need to use one tablespoon of salt to one pint of water and bathe it thoroughly. You can also get some hibiscrub on this twice a day also. You dilute it down. You also need to allow an abscess to heal from the inside out and therefore not allow the top to seal over BUT………………………. You WILL need anti-biotics from your vets as well. If you’ve just been enjoying yourself abroad for three months then you must be able to afford the vets. If you were in the UK and didn’t get this treated you could be prosecuted – and quite right too.
How do I best treat an absess on a puppy?
Q: The puppy sustained injuries while being attacked by another dog. The abscess started small and we were told it would go away. She has been on antibiotics for a week and the abscess is only getting bigger. We are supposed to see the vet in one week from today. Can I wait until then to have it checked or is this something that I should have drained immediately.
A: see the vet now or at least call, would you even ask this if if were your childand please be responsible and don’t allow your puppy to be attacked again, you are your dogs protector
