If it doesn’t hurt now, it will be a matter of time before it does, and it’s never at a convenient time. The threat of severe pain and infection exists, as well as the spread of infection elsewhere, which can be life threatening.

Have you ever had an abscessed tooth?
Q: If so, what were your symptoms and how long did it take to get better?Did you have to have the tooth pulled?
A: I have had many. It hurts like on a scale of 1-10 about a 9.99. There is usually swelling around the tooth, mostly around the gum level. It feels like some major pressure building inside the tooth. It is almost intolerable. The real danger with them is that sometimes the abcess will break, i.e. act just like a burst appendix and all the poison will go into the blood stream. I had that happen once just after a doctor gave me a massive dose of penicillin. I would have died if he had not given me that, I was very ill for a few days. If your tooth is abcessed the dentist will prescribe an antibiotic and that will ease off the pain and prevent it from bursting. You take the AB for about 10 days, then he will tell you if he can save the tooth or have to extract it. But go to a dentist or to the er it really hurts terrible. It does not get better on its own…sorry.
HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN ABSCESS TOOTH BEFORE IT BECOMES SERIOUS?
Q: I’ve had an abscess in my wisdom tooth for atleast 3 to 4 months now. It hurts every once in a while, I have taken 2 types of penicillins for it so far. i know i need to get them taken out but i cannot get an appointment any time soon. So how long do you have to have an abscessed tooth before it can kill you even if you have taken antibiotics for it?
A: I had an abscess for a few years. I had an initial pain after receiving a shot in my gums. The pain was horrible for a few weeks, and then it went away. An abscess showed up several years later and found out I had to have a root canal at 16. The abscess still did not go away and so I went to a doctor that specializes in that field. He said the infection was in the upper jaw bone and that it would have to be drilled out and a filler would be placed there. He also said I needed my wisdoms out yay! So I had 5 teeth pulled and worked on. I still am missing that tooth to this day at the age of 18 because I no longer have dental insurance to get the tooth replaced.
does it hurt to get an abscessed tooth pulled??
Q: I’m rreeeaaalllyyy SCAREDi have to get my tooth pulledplus how long will it take apprximately?Does it hurt?will they use novacaineand it is an adult tooth if that gives you any help to answer this??
A: First of all, your dentist won’t take your tooth out until the infection has healed. I expect you are taking antibiotics now? Yes? The pain of an abcess is excrutiating and can cause all sorts of problems. However, it doesn’t hurt to have the tooth out because you will be given lignocaine injections first – and they work really well. The whole thing will probably be over in a couple of minutes. Just a note – you will feel some pulling but don’t be scared by this, it won’t hurt. Tell your dentist how nervous you are and remember they deal with nervous patients all the time. He/she wants to make you better. You will feel a bit sore when the painkillers wear off after it’s done but the mouth is brilliant at healing quickly so you should be fine again in a couple of days. Just follow the instructions on the care sheet you’ll be given.Take a few deep breaths before hand and relax. Your fear of it is far worse than having it done.
