What will happen if you take too long to extract and abscessed wisdom tooth?
Q: I have an abscess in one my wisdom teeth, i took antibiotics for it 5-6 months ago to kill it. I didnt go to my doctor appt. when i was supposed to caue i admit it, i was too scared. They said they have to put me under anesthesia and i’m terrified of that. Well it’s been months since i was supposed to take it out. Do you think anything’s gonna happen to me? I’m gonna make an appointment ASAP, do you think the abscess came back? what will happen if you wait too long to take out an abscess tooth? Thanks but the reason why I’m going to the dentist i go to is because I’m on Medicaid and that’s the only dentist that will pull wisdoms on mediacaid. =/
A: I would suggest that you go to a different dentist, first of all, since to pull a wisdom tooth, they do not need to put you under anesthesia, they can just use novocaine-type pain killer shots to numb the tooth. Pulling a tooth only takes about 10-15 minutes or so, plus the time it takes after pulling it to clean up the area and do X-rays to see if it is all out and done right. I would call up several other dentists and ask them if they do need to use anesthesia, and if they say no, that’s never done, change dentists immediately, as this makes me suspicious somehow. Also, ask these dentists over the phone how long does it usually take to pull a wisdom tooth, in case I am mistaken; I know it takes this long for other rear teeth, so I am assuming it takes the same length of time to pull a wisdom tooth. Now, as far as your main question here, if it was absessed it will eventually absess again, and it needs to be pulled as soon as possible to avoid another infection. You can probably tell if it’s infected and how much it’s infected by how much and for how long it hurts. If it had never gotten to the point of absessing, then you could get away with waiting awhile and then make an emergency appointment when it starts hurting or hurting worse. But in your case, if you wait too long, the infection could flare up again soon and this could cause your whole face to swell up from the infection and it could cause your blood pressure to shoot sky high, and plus, left untreated, the infection can go systemic, meaning that it gets into the rest of your body and causes lots of serious health problems. I actually had this happen and it was very serious, I could’ve died from it. I found out that most dentists nowadays have no idea whether or not an infection has gone systemic or not or if it has how in the world to treat it. When I had this happen and my face on one side was all swollen up, and I was in constant pain in my tooth, I did go to the emergency room before I was able to see the dentist, and he gave me some antibiotics, but the antibiotics won’t get rid of the problem, they just help a little bit when it’s that bad.So, don’t do what I did and let it go. My face swelled up when I didn’t expect it to, as I had been getting by without the dentist for a long time and putting up with the hurting tooth for a long time. So, this can really suddenly sneak up on you, and then you have to deal with how do you get to the dentist right away and can you afford the dentist and which dentist to go to, all at the last minute when this tooth thing has turned into a nightmarish situation. Also, you need to find a dentist whom you feel real comfortable with who is loving, nurturing, real nice, who understands about fear of dentists and dental work, and who has taken the effort to make the dental office an unthreatening place to be. For instance, a dentist I found that I felt comfortable with years ago had all of these really nice qualities about him, and he set things up so that his patients could listen to relaxing music on headphones while he worked on them, and he provided the headphones and the relaxing music, and he put these pretty pictures on the ceiling to look at while you lay there. He always made sure that I got enough of the novocaine-type stuff so that I felt no pain, and during operations if I moaned or raised my hand to let him know something was wrong, he’d ask me what was wrong or ask me to nod yes or no to his questions. All of this really helped me a lot to relax more. I found over the years that I have to feel comfortable in the presence of the particular dentist, I have to like him, and I have to feel like if I were having an anxiety attack or were in too much pain, he’d care and try to help me through it. This made all the difference for me!Don’t be afraid to call up various dentists and ask their receptionist or dental assistant or the dentist him/herself lots of questions. Maybe you could make an appointment for a minor checkup or a minor filling, just to see if you like the dentist first, and make another appointment for another time for them to pull the tooth?
Isn’t seven weeks a ridiculously long time to ask someone with an abscessed tooth?
Q: to wait to have it extracted? I have been a patient of this particular oral surgeon for four years, so I’m not walking in off the street. Shouldn’t an office have time slots for emergency visits? Why would this not be considered an emergency? I have already taken one round of antibiotics, but my tooth still hurts, the glands in my neck hurt (on the side of the abscessed tooth), and I just generally feel ill. I am completely dumbfounded that an oral surgeon’s office would actually ask someone to suffer seven weeks before having their tooth extracted. What do you think? (Please don’t state the obvious, which is that I could see someone else. There is a reason I’d like to stay with this practice if at all possible, but right now, I’m really pissed.)
A: As a dentist I can assure you that waiting this long with an abscess is extremely dangerous. You need to call this dentist back and ask for an emergency appointment, if he/she is not willing to do so then I highly recommend that you find another dentist. An abscess can be life threatening if not treated as this infection can have the ability to spread to other areas of the body via the bloodstream. This can cause upper airway obstructions, and can spread to the heart and brain. PLEASE see this dentist or another dentist ASAP!! Good luck!
My dog has an abscessed tooth. Vet isn’t open for another 2 days? What to do?
Q: My 13 year old Shih Tzu has his 2nd abscessed tooth in 6 months. The first one occurred while we were living in the US and I was able to get it taken care of quickly through a local Veterinarian. Now however, my husband and I are stationed overseas in Japan and are having the same issue… swollen, puss-filled bump under his left eye. I just discovered the problem today (about 30 minutes ago to be exact), but unfortunately the veterinary office on base has ridiculous hours and won’t be open again for another 2 days. I want to get my dog seen right away, but going to a vet out in town is going to cost about 4 times as much as it would on base, not to mention the language barrier. Does anyone with *credible* knowledge on this subject have any advice as to how waiting the 2 days will affect my dog? For the previous abscessed tooth in the States, my dog was given antibiotics until he could be seen for the surgery, which was about 3 days after the initial swelling in his face began. I am worried that now, if he waits 2 days WITHOUT antibiotics that it could cause more serious problems, especially with him being so old… What would you recommend? Thank you in advance for your answers.
