Post tonsillectomy questions, concerns? PLEASE?
Q: I got my tonsils removed yesterday morning (Wednesday, Feb. 18th). Since then i’ve been sleeping non stop. The doctors prescribed me oxycodone, and that super delicious tasting pink liquid antibiotic. I still feel super doped up, even after all of the anesthesia has worn off. I’m taking the oxycodone for pain as often as possible, which i every 6 hours. I REALLY cannt get past how gruesome my throat feels and looks. It looks like a partially fried piece of pork chop back there. I know it’s normal to have scabbing, and they fall off within a week, but I just can’t get past the “meaty” feeling in the back of my throat when i swallow.I would just like some tips from people who have gotten theirs removed (at an age you could remember). Right now I’m living off of slushies and soup. My surgeon actually told me that I could eat whatever i wanted to after surgery, as opposed to just liduidy foods because working my throat muscles will help the healing process. I was really surprised because I heard this was a major no no for tonsillectomy surgery… Last night, the night after my surgery, I tried eating a cheeseburger, because I honestly trust my ENT’s advice. I chewed it the best I could, and afterwards very lightly gargled to get the chunks of food out. I don’t think it hurt as much then because I still had anesthesia in me, but now I really don’t even wanna think about eating anything remotely “hard”. Also, I have some flem, and my ENt also said it was okay to cough it up, it’s just sooo dicomforting, I feel like the scabbing is goign to fall out, adn I’m going to start bleeding. Ugh I donnno.Like I said I would just like some advice from people with experience. If it helps, I’m 18 years old. I heard the olde tou are the more it hurts afterwards, is this true? What did you do to keep your mind off the pain. Any other food suggestions rather than slushies and soup? How many times a day would you reccommend I bruch my teeth? And also, any other encouraging words would be great. I haven’t had surgery since I was five years old, and so a you could imagine i am really freaked out right now. I just want to properly take care of myself.I apologize if this is a little difficult to understand. I still feel a bit whoozy and out of it. Thanks.
A: have not had them removed.had so many sore throats, that they more or less rotted away.that was painful each time.i am 46.i know what u mean.sounds like ur doing good.the oxycodone will help u get thru this.ur almost there.hang in there, kiddo!
Tonsil stones and Water Picks?
Q: So I’ve read a lot of ways to deal with tonsil stones. Here’s my issue: I get the ones that are easily coaxed off by a q-tip or gargling on my right tonsil. My left, however, looks nothing like my right. It’s very lumpy and I see little white parts of the tonsil stones peeking out from behind the swollen tonsil. I’m NOT going to try and push them or dig them out. I’d rather not bleed everywhere and give my throat a chance for a worser sort of infection. I’m NOT going to get surgery to have them removed. What I want to know…is that for anyone with tonsil stones that deep inside to where you can just see tiny peeks of them: do water picks work for those? My doctors (ENT and general) are irritatingly stupid sometimes (they even admit these things to me in their office when explaining how they don’t know what to do). So, I’d appreciate your answer on this that isn’t “go to the doctor.” Thank you gWhat I DO already so is brush my teeth twice a day, floss often, don’t eat an hour before bed and gargle with warm salt water before I go to sleep every night. I have been doing this for months now and the lumps on my left tonsil have still not gone away.
A: No, water piks will not help, it may push them further in, I have noticed with patients that Green tea helps quite a bit, not erradicates them, but decreases their rapidity in forming. It is exudate from the tonsils aswell as debris and plaque from your mouth that accumulate there.
