A horse at the ranch where I board has strangles. What can I do to make sure my horse doesn’t get it?
Q: The horse with strangles is in quarentine in the back of the property, but I just want to make sure. This ranch has had a strangles problem before. What can I do to make sure my mare doesnt get it?
A: Chances are good that more horses will present signs in the next few weeks. This horse got it from somewhere, it does not “just show up”. Sadly it can be airborne – flys, leaves , cats, ANYTHING that comes in contact with the pus that drains from noses or abcesses can carry it to another horse. It is too late for the shots, as to give them now, after your horse may be infected could cause bastard strangles – which is when the abcess forms inward – and either pushes against organs or pops and drains internally. The same can happen if certain antibiotics are used. Strict Quarantine is about all that can be done – a boot tray to wash boots as the owner leaves the horse, disposable gloves, and keep ALL things used by the poor horse AWAY from all others. He may drool / run a fever – abcesses can develop anywhere , commonly the throat and face – they will pop on their own and as long as the horse is eating and drinking he should be fine in a few weeks. THEN get ALL the boarders and horse owners to GET THE SHOTS done and insist that all new horses also have them done prior to coming on the property. Let us know how it works out for you – strangles is the oldest recorded equine disease – but seldom fatal, and like chicken pox in humans – you rarely get it twice.
strangles from horses to people?
Q: Ok, as far as I know, equine strangles can’t be passed from a horse to a person. I am currently getting accused of my horse (who does not have strangles) passing it into a person who came and rode him last week. They say it’s because he’s the last horse the girl has had contact with. From what I know, people cannot catch the equine strain of strep (strangles). But apparently, the doctor tested her, and she has strangles. Please help. Could my horse be infected? Thanks guys! Yea, My horse is his normal self. He eats, drink, etc. Has no swelling, not even a runny nose! He is older (22) and I’m sure if he had any disease, it would more than likely show quickly. This girl has only been around him once, and I’m constantly around him, and I’m not even sick. (and my horse and I come face to face constantly, he likes to give kisses) As far as I knew, almost any virus a horse can get, a human can’t and vice versa, as it’s species specific. My guess is like yours, she probably contracted strep from another person. My horse, or no other horse in my barn seems to be sick, and I’m over pre-cautious with my horse because of his age, and I’m the over-concerned type who calls the vet for everything! As far as I know, there are no sick horses in my barn as well. Also, he usually gets no contact with other horses or other buckets, etc. My horse is a stud, and has a stall that isn’t in the main barn, and opens up to the walkway to the arena(outside)and also goes into a paddock outside, where there are 2 run outs next to him, but the horses are locked inside for the winter, and even if were out, there is a double electric fence surrounding him, which he is entirely too scared to even come close to.gallop: how can my horse give her stangles when he isn’t sick? and that’s a rare case from what I know of. The man also had HIV, as a nurse you should know that means the immune system is decreased, giving him minimal immunity. This girl goes not have any disease, and was otherwise healthy, honestly I think she’s just trying to start trouble, as she’s telling a bunch of people my horse gave it to her..how does my horse give her a disease when he’s not sick??
A: People cannot catch strangles, Sarah. That doctor is either an ignoramus or a fraud, I am not sure which, if he believes that this girl you are talking about caught strep throat from your horse. Streptococcus Equi affects HORSES ONLY, NOT PEOPLE, and the doctor should KNOW THIS. I also HIGHLY DOUBT your horse is infected with the disease, because if this were true, there is no way in Hell you would have allowed this girl to ride him. Horses with strangles get VERY SICK, Sarah. They run a high fever that lasts for days, and they develop huge abscesses in their throats, and sometimes in other parts of their bodies. In most cases, they become unable to eat or drink normally because their throats get so sore, and they are very weak and listless. From what you’ve said in your question, this horse has no symptoms at all, and is eating and drinking normally. That means it’s not likely he’s ill, and even if per chance he is incubating an infection, the only way this girl could possibly have contracted the disease from him would be if she had been in DIRECT PHYSICAL contact with the horse’s nasal secretions, and it doesn’t sound to me as if this was the case. Sitting on a saddle on the horse’s back DOES NOT constitute direct contact with the horse’s head or face, and I am sure you must realize this, as the doctor does not. This girl needs to be taken to another doctor, preferably one who actually KNOWS SOMETHING about horses and how diseases like strangles are transmitted. Strangles CAN be passed from horse to horse by way of a person who carries the bacteria on their shoes or who works with a healthy horse after treating a sick one and fails to wash his or her hands in between the two. That’s why it’s so important to observe strict infection control protocols during outbreaks of the disease, including isolation of any and all horses which are showing symptoms. Horses spread this disease to one another by direct contact- usually by way of a shared water trough or across a common fence line when they rub or sniff noses. The other part of this which this girl’s doctor is evidently unaware of is that there is a VACCINE for strangles which most horses commonly receive. This vaccine isn’t perfect, but it does help to reduce the infection rates and it also helps prevent horses from developing serious complications from strangles, such as pneumonia. If your horse has been vaccinated within the last 6 months, you have nothing to worry about. Strangles is also easily treated with antibiotics, although sometimes massive doses are needed, especially in severe cases. When I lived in Michigan a number of years ago, there was a strangles outbreak which went through the herd at the facility I was working at. We had about 10 horses which got sick, and all but one of them recovered. There were two, however, that developed massive abscesses in their faces and bodies, and had to be on antibiotics for WEEKS. During that time, NO ONE on the barn staff got sick with the disease, however- and we were in almost constant contact with the discharges from the sick animals. This is another reason ( apart from the fact that I work as a medical coder) why I think that the chances of this girl catching strep throat from your horse were almost ZERO. She probably caught the infection at school- it’s HIGHLY LIKELY that at least one other kid in her class has had the disease in the last month or so, and when one kid in a classroom gets it, sooner or later they ALL WILL. Strep throat is one of the most common infections which school aged children get, in fact. That’s because the strep bug is hardy and can live for weeks or even months on surfaces like desks, doorknobs, telephones, computer terminals, walls, floors, and the like. Kids in a classroom are touching the same surfaces every day for months at a time, and breathing the same air every day. If even one of them picks something up and brings it in, like the flu or strep, sooner or later, the disease will go through the whole group. That’s what undoubtedly has happened to this girl you know. Presumably, the doctor put this girl on antibiotics as soon as she tested positive for strep, and gave her the usual precaution about staying home for 24 or 48 hours, or until they took effect. I would relax, and ignore the accusations. They are baseless and make no sense, and anyone who’s accusing you of infecting this girl is ignorant and knows nothing about either horses or this disease. Enough said.
