Q: i have a big bump under my right arm. i’m guessing it’s right about where my lymph nodes would be. it’s totally obvious just by looking at my arm pit. the top of it is red but i can’t tell if there is any break in the skin (i don’t think there is). it hurts to touch the top of it but the rest of it (the bump or lump) doesn’t really hurt. it also hurts to move my arm a certain way. it moves with my skin if i move my skin around. i shaved under my arms on friday night and noticed this bump on sunday night so i thought it might be an ingrown hair but i thought that there would have to be a break in the skin for that. it hasn’t really gotten any bigger since i noticed it (sunday night) there really hasn’t been any change that i can think of. i haven’t had any type of infection on my arm or anything like that and i have no other bumps anywhere else on my body. i’m 24 years old so i’m not thinking it could be breast ca but you never know (i don’t really have any family history of it). any ideas what this could be? i’ll probably go to the doctor but i doubt they’ll be open tomorrow or the next day because of christmas so i’ll have to wait until they open back up. thanks in advance!

A: You would not see a lymph node. They are much deeper.This is an integumental (skin) problem. The redness and tenderness indicate inflammation – probably infection. The above answer covers this well. Do not worry about breast cancer with this description – especially at age 24 which would be very unusual for breast cancer. Your regular doc can handle this after Christmas if it does not get better with simple local measures as described above.

Q: I have a huge lump under my arm from an ingrown hair. I STUPIDLY shaved over it. I then poked it and squeezed it when it got a bit infected. It hasn’t come to a head and it is VERY painful. I went to the doctor and he said it can NOT be lanced. It’s HUGE though (golf ball size). I’m thinking mostly what I feel though is maybe a swollen lymph node and some scar tissue (I really poked and prodded at it, I know it’s a “no no” but I wanted to alleviate the pressure so bad but it wouldn’t release). I’m taking antibiotics for it and I’m trying to bring it to a “head” by putting hot compresses on it. However, the doctor said it may just dissipate on its own. I know I made it worse by pushing the infection further in by squeezing at it and pricking it (ouch). I had a 102 temperature but it’s gone down now since I’ve been on the antibiotics for almost 24 hrs. He’s checking it again tomorrow.My MAIN QUESTION is though about what is it TECHNICALLY CALLED???????? I know you probably can’t tell without seeing it. It started off as an ingrown hair or follucitis (I get that often). Does this sound more like a sebaceous cyst or a boil/abscess? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!And sorry, if I grossed anyone out. A: it sounds like you have a staph infection.. There are several types of staph infections.. Are you taking keflex? Or bactrim (think thats the spelling) do not push on it! If you do have a staph it could lead to worse case scenario if the infection gets worse.
