Christmas Lights

When you were young
You skittered down the stairs before the sun
To see what lay beneath the lights
That garlanded the tree.

Your eyes were wide
To think that gifts were waiting just for you,
Laid out just there beneath the lights
Spread out beneath the tree.

It’s harder now
To find that joy that brought you down the stairs
But wide eyes there beneath the lights–
His eyes help you to see.
