Trestman Needs to Be the Choice for Raiders

When Reggie McKenzie was introduced as the Oakland Raiders new general manager on January 10, 2012 he made it very clear that he wants to bring in his own guy to be head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Marc Trestman should be McKenzie’s guy, but, sadly for the Raiders I believe that McKenzie is going to make the wrong choice. It is believed that Winston Moss will be the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Moss like McKenzie is a Raider alumnus. Winston Moss is presently the assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach of the Green Bay Packers and is intimate with the structure that Reggie McKenzie wants to build in Oakland. This appears to make Winston Moss the leader in the clubhouse for the head coaching vacancy with the Raiders, but, in my opinion Marc Trestman is still the right man for the job.

Reggie McKenzie has said he favors the west coast offense. Marc Trestman has used the west coast offense throughout his coaching career. Like all general managers McKenzie wants a proven winner. Trestman is exactly that a winner. He has mentored Hall of Famers such as Steve Young and Jerry Rice along with developing MVP’s such as Rich Gannon and Anthony Calvillo. (2 time MVP of the CFL)

Every organization dreams of bringing in a coach with a proven track record and a history of success. Trestman who is presently the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes has two Grey Cup Championships with that team in 2009 and 2010. He also guided the Oakland Raiders to an AFC Championship in 2002 as their offensive coordinator. This goes along with 15 playoff appearances throughout his professional career. Collegiately Trestman was the quarterback coach under Jimmy Johnson when the Miami Hurricanes won the National Championship in 1983.

It is not my intention to bore you with dry facts and statistics but in the field of sports isn’t winning the first and last barometer of success? Reggie McKenzie is going to rebuild the Oakland Raider organization using the model that Ron Wolf put together in Green Bay, and that is the right thing to do, but, without the right head coach all of Reggie McKenzie’s hard work will ultimately be a waste of time. Winston Moss is an unproven commodity; Marc Trestman is a bona fide head coach with a record of success that cannot be matched by any other candidate presently in the running for the position.

Mark Davis has hired Reggie McKenzie because Davis has stated that he wants an organization that will have long term success. McKenzie can begin to do this by hiring Marc Trestman to be the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders but I simply do not believe that this will happen. Sometimes it does not matter how successful you have been in your chosen field but more importantly if you happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Reggie McKenzie will hire someone that he knows well, and is comfortable with in building an organization.

Unfortunately for the Raider Nation Marc Trestman will not be that man.
