What Radiologists generally refer to as calcification are areas of calcium deposition when there are white colour opacities similar to the density of bone seen in X-rays Calcium deposition in tissues can be both normal and abnormal. It normally occurs with aging in certain tissues. For example the costochondral joints which are the cartilage joints between the sternum (breast bone) and our ribs undergo calcification with age and appear dense white in X-rays. A common cause of localized calcification in the pelvic area are “Phelboliths”. Phleboliths are calcification’s that occur in small pelvic veins sometimes following clot formation. These are generally nothing to worry about and are commonly seen in normal healthy people. These are usually multiple and and seen mostly in the pelvic area just line in your barium enema. There are many other causes of calcification such as tumors (both benign and malignant), and other causes of generalized hypercalcaemia (increased calcium in your blood).
Have you broken any bones in your pelvis? As this could be a reason. It is a build up of calcium in your pelvis….
