Yes it can be very painful. Compare it to menstrual cramps times 10. The reason is because your body is cleaning out the stuff from your uterus and you have contractions to get it out. Surprisingly there is a whole bunch of stuff that comes…

No.  Apparently it varies from woman to woman.  And for some women it’s like a really, really heavy period.  And for other women (like me), it’s full-on labor with horrendous contractions and the whole nine yards.

are miscarriages painful?
Q: just wondering….. I thought I might have had a couple miscarriages but it wasn’t take painful. I think I had a miscarriage because I bled like a pool of blood with clots but it was painless. So could that have been a miscarriage or am I just trippin?
A: I had 2 miscarriages and one was like a very bad period cramp and the other was more like full blown labor. Of course I was 8 weeks with the first one and 16 weeks with the second.During my second miscarriage, the Dr. had to remove the fetusas by body was not self-aborting. It was awful and extremely emotional. If your far enough along, you will see the fetal tissue or a well developed very tiny fetus. Not something you are ever prepared for!
Do all miscarriages have to be painful?
Q: I had a miscarriage about 1 1/2 years ago at 8 weeks and it was incredibly painful. I was in bed all day with cramps and was bleeding very heavey. So, I am asking this because my husband and I weren’t very careful this month and I started my period early…8 days early. It was very heavey with a lot of clots(more than usual) but no cramping. It only lasted for 2 days which is also unusual because my periods last 6 days and are pretty light. I don’t really think I had a miscarriage, but was just wondering if all miscarriages are painful? Please let me know if you have any idea.
A: no. i miscarried my first baby and did not bleed out or cramp at all.i went for my 12wk scan to be told my baby stopped growing at 9weeks and had been dead inside me for 3 weeks without my body recognising it. i had to have a d&c 2 days later.
What is a miscarriage like? How painful is it? What should i do to prepare for one?
Q: We had our 12wk ultrasound yesterday and found out the baby died at around 7wks 4d. Since its already been 5 wks i doubt this is going to happen naturally and am hopeing to be able to take the pill that will start the miscarriage and avoid a D&C. What can i do to prepare myself for this? How painful is it? Any tips or info you have would be great.
A: I’m so sorry that this has happened to you. Miscarriage is not pleasant but you shouldn’t suffer any unbearable physical pain. You will feel cramping, rather like strong period pains and you will lose blood and tissue like during a period. Be sure not to use tampons, use high absorbency pads. Paracetamol should be enough to help with the cramping, you may also like to use a hot water bottle. Take a warm bath and get plenty of rest, don’t try to do too much. Bear in mind that a high number of women who have a miscarriage or have an embryo die in the womb go on to have a healthy pregnancy so there’s every chance that next time things will be okay. Just take care of yourself and rest plenty. There is still a possibility that you may need a D&C even if you miscarry, just to be sure that your womb is empty but your doctor will examine you and make sure that everything is okay. Good luck honey.
