- Q: i am 7 weeks & 3 days pregnant. i had an ultra sound at 7 weeks & the babys heart beat was 158.61. everyone i know tells me that high heart beats mean its a girl? what do you think?
- A: Heart rate changes from early to late pregnancy. And while this theory technically falls in the realm of an old wives tale, after monitoring hundreds of babies in my career I can tell you that there are definite trends. In the last half of pregnancy, more female babies trend higher from 140s-160s, while more boys trend lower from 110s-130s. But the key is that you have to know for certain you are listening to the baby’s baseline heart rate and not just a temporary acceleration. A baseline rate can only be established through continuous monitoring for greater than 20 minutes and observing the tracing. You can’t predict based on hearing it on a hand held doppler for a few moments. By no means to all babies fit this mold, but I’d say probably 80% of the time, perhaps more, they do.
- If the heartbeat is high, what does that mean?
- Q: My sister went for her second doctor visit and the heartbeat was 157. I know she won’t be able to tell the sex of the baby until she has her ultrasound(Well hopefully anyways). I heard it is a girl if it is high. Is that true?It is a shame. I have two kids of my own but it seems like so long ago because they are 9 and almost 4 now.
- A: Mine was the same. Everyone at work told me I was going to have a girl because the heartrate was always between 140-160 so I was convinced I was having a girl until I had my ultra sound at 21 weeks, and NOPE. I now have an EXTREMELY active 3 year-old son.
- Does anyone know if a higher heartbeat means it’s a boy?
- Q: I just had my first visit at 9 weeks and we got to hear the heartbeat. So cool! Anyway, it was between 140-160. We’ve been hearing that higher heart rates typically are boys while slower ones are girls. Did anyone else happen to notice this? Is this fact or fiction?
- A: i have always heard the opposite, that lower heartbeat is a boy and higher is a girl! i thot it was true till this pregnancy, now im not so sure! i have five boys and all their heartbeats were in the 140’s, and this time the heartbeat was in the 140’s so i just knew i was havin another boy but when i had my sono done they said it was a girl. at my dr app today the heartbeat was in the 150s!
