A: Well, this is the information I have gathered. Chances of getting pregnant around your period are impossible. Sperm can only live for 5 days in the fallopian tubes. Which means IF they get there, they can get you pregnant if you’re due to ovulate in 5 days. Otherwise, they live for 24 hours in the vagina and die instantly in open air and chlorine or water (this doesn’t mean that sperm will definitely hit water or chlorine before or while entering the vagina if you have sex in water). You can only get pregnant a week at most before your ovulation day and 24 hours after it. Your ovulation day is about halfway though your cycle. Your cycle begins with the first day of your period and ends the day before your next period. A girl/woman’s cycle is typically 28 days but mine is 32. This counts each day including the first day of your period and the day before the next. Typically your ovulation day is 2 weeks after your period (mine included). You can chart your cycle by recording when you have your period. Count how many days there are from your first day to the day before the following one. This is your cycle length. Then all you need is the first day of your last period and you can chart your ovulation day on any ovulation calendar. I use JX Ovulation Calendar. It is made to show you when you are fertile so you can get pregnant but you can use the information to avoid pregnancy too. Although this is extremely helpful information, it is advised that you use protection just in case (although I am not one to preach on the subject). Even if you have unprotected sex during or near ovulation, you won’t necessarily get pregnant though but DON’T try it if you don’t want a baby. We’ve done this many times and haven’t. We don’t use protection though because we leave it in God’s hands. If he wants us to have a baby, he’ll give us one. Good luck and better planning next time.
