My doctor prescribed Compazine for morning sickness?
Q: I’m 8 weeks pregnant and having horrible nausea, but no vomiting. My doctor prescribed me Compazine to help with the nausea, but when I picked up the prescription I read the warnings that came with it. It’s not recommended for pregnant women except in cases where the benefits outweigh the risks- like if I was dehydrated or losing weight. There are risks of birth defects as well as some pretty bad side effects for me. I’m definitely not going to take the medication because of this. Now I don’t know what to do about my doctor. I don’t think I trust her after this. I feel like she should’ve explained the risks of this drug when she prescribed it. I’m anxious about this pregnancy anyway (it’s my first) and I don’t know if I’m overreacting or if I need to find a new doctor. Any advice?
A: Your doctor knows the risks, so I am sure she knew when she prescribed it. I have exorcist style morning sickness 24/7 while pregnant. I lost about 20 pounds during my first pregnancy, and am really sick now that I am pregnant again. I am really into my unborn baby’s health and won’t take anything while pregnant. It helps that my ob docs are holistic so they support my decisions. I would advise you against taking any prescriptions while pregnant because none are safe for baby. Of course if you have to like for an infection or if you have gestational diabetes that is different. I consider morning sickness a major pain and very draining, but not a medically necessary reason to take a prescription drug. Talk to your doc and let her know how you feel. Chances are she was just responding to your complaints and trying to be helpful.
