Outpost, Power Suit Concept Art Revealed for ‘Starship Troopers: Invasion’

There’s more news on the upcoming CG animated sequel to the live-action “Starship Troopers” films. According to the official blog, writer Flint Dille, producer Joseph Chou, and director Shinji Aramaki are busy fleshing out the script for “Starship Troopers: Invasion.” Aramaki is working on concept art for the film.

One thing they were trying to work out for “Invasion” was how to give the Arachnids the capability to fly in space. The bugs are technologically advanced in Robert A. Heinlein’s book. However, they aren’t shown to be that sophisticated in the movies.

According to the blog, they have come up with a way for the Arachnids to travel through space but aren’t prepared to share the details with us. Although there’s quite a bit of hinting that we’re going to get some space battles in this film.

The production team of “Starship Troopers: Invasion” has also pinpointed who they are making the film for: gamers of the world. Dille, Chou, and Aramaki feel they’re the ones who will be most excited by a film that features “vast space battles, vicious hand-to-hand [battles], dazzling CG, and a character-driven, military-based story arc.”

Aramaki has been hard at work on a couple of design concepts as well. He’s known for his technical design work on TV shows and movies like “Appleseed: Ex Machina,” “Halo Legends,” and many more. His concept designs for the interior and exterior of a Federation outpost named Fort Casey have been posted on the official blog. Aramaki’s concept art for a power suit inspired by the ones in the original novel also appears on the blog.

“Invasion” revolves around the team of the attack ship Alesia, which has been commissioned to help the Starship John A. Warden evacuate the survivors and military personnel from a Federation outpost that has come under attack by the Arachnids. Before the Alesia arrives, Minister of Paranormal Warfare Carl Jenkins leads the John A. Warden on a secret mission and goes missing in a nebula.

There’s been no solid release date, except sometime in 2012. Actor Casper Van Dien hasn’t announced if his character Johnny Rico from the first and third “Starship Troopers” will make an appearance in the new movie. However, he is an executive producer for the project. In addition, there’s been no official word as to whether Neil Patrick Harris will return to voice the character of Carl Jenkins.
