Acne can be very embarrassing and it can affect anyone at any time. Usually acne starts to develop in teens who have reached the age of maturity. Most people who experience the effects of acne eventually out grow it in their twenties sometimes thirties however acne can still affect people well into their fifties.

Acne can be identified by its tender red bumps commonly referred to as zits or pimples. Acne appears in the skin as congested pores also known as whiteheads and blackheads. No one factor causes acne to develop there are many factors. Acne develops when sebaceous, also known as oil glands which are attached to the hair follicles are stimulated at the time of puberty by elevated male hormone levels.

Sebaceous glands produce sebum which is oil that lubricates and protects skin. Skin cells mature faster than they should so that they are predisposed which in turn clogs the follicle openings or pores. These clogged pores gradually grow enlarged which produces the bump or pimple. The bumps or pimples will eventually rupture which causes irritation to deeper layers of skin producing redness and inflammation.

Some factors that play a role in the development of acne me are food, dirt, stress, heredity, cosmetics, drugs and other medications. Acne can develop in the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back.
