Any experts on Atkins or South Beach or other low carb high nutrition diets for comments?
Q: I am looking for any expert advisers who would take the time to comment on my views. Simply because I do not want to steer anyone down a path to poor health since I have been down several myself and with bad results. So I am seeking comments on my post that follows:<<<<<<<<POSTING1>>>>>>>>>Hi,After reading your question I thought I would give you some pointers I have learned the hard way from my own bad ‘uninformed’ choices.Keeping to any plan that fights against bad habits is tough but being fit and strong versus being fat and sickly is all about how many calories you eat versus how many you burn and IF the calories are mostly the BEST QUALITY PROTEINS or mostly junk sugar-carbs. Many years ago I found that the Atkins Diet Plan made me healthier compared to my old high carb diet since it put my diabetes symptoms into remission, but PLEASE consider my experiences when I used the Atkins high cholesterol and fat philosophy for my long term nutrition. After the Atkins plan promoted many diseases, what now works best in order for me to keep my pruritus-urticaria in remission, after my gallbladder-biliary-liver and heart disease problems, is a 96% VEGAN diet, (for the required B12), that is low-carb low-fat and HIGH-PROTEIN. Because of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease I no longer can eat much olive oil or dressings or nuts or other fats or any cholesterol because it causes immediate pruritus since my liver’s biliary system is plugged with cholesterol and calcium sludge, and I can not eat too many carbs because of yeast infections that break out after one, two, or three high carb meals. What I now do is what they teach most students in high school nutrition classes – which is to add up the vitamins and minerals from my ‘digestible’ foods and calculating the RDA’s [Recommended Dietary Allowances] or DV’s [Daily Reference Values] for each day to see if I am more than 100% for Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Thiamine-VitB1, Riboflavin-VitB2, Niacin-VitB3, VitB6-Pyridoxine, and Folate-VitB9. Things like bran are not digestible and not added since it is like a work horse or work oxen eating straw instead of digestible grass or alfalfa leaves. Also, after I accidentally poisoned myself with supplements, I leaned that supplements like iron and magnesium and colloidal silver etc are super toxic since they are ‘metallic’ minerals and oftentimes raw fertilizers with a 1000 fold markup. These ‘metallic’ mineral supplements have not yet been converted into a non-toxic food when during photosynthesis the electrons in a fertilizer are stripped away making it the more positively charged ‘non-metallic’ and non-toxic mineral element within the plant. Also, the highly profitable synthetic vitamin supplements I used to purchase have no unambiguous research backing them, and there is some obviously valid research concluding that they are more toxic than beneficial to any animal that has ever consumed them. What now keeps my diseases in remission is mostly a diet of cooked lentils then mixed with tomato sauce and boiled celery to make a quick microwave super high protein veg-chili. I boil all my foods since my digestive system is in such poor shape and I need as many nutrients as I can get out of the semi-expensive foods I buy.I used to eat much more meat when I was an Atkins dieter, before my pruritus attacks became so obvious that the cholesterol and fats in the meat or eggs and the calcium in the homemade yogurt I was eating was the root cause to the problem. FYI – IF you know of people getting colon cancer, it was during my Atkins period I learned to always eat enough vegetables to be a minimum of 2 x the weight of the meat that I ate – in order to not have any constipation or worse. I used to have reddish stools since I was likely on my way to getting colon cancer myself from eating much more meat protein than I could ever digest properly in my stomach and colon. After the Atkins Diet allowed my present health issues, I replaced the crock potted round steak or beef heart or chicken and sometimes river trout in my chili with lentils, because I learned that the nutritional content of lentils ranks high alongside, and comparable to, very lean meat or lean fish if it is grown in well fertilized soil. [Note: e.g. the labels on store bought spinach sometimes have a 4 fold difference in nutrition based upon the fertility of the soils and the growing methods for the farms it is grown on.] I also eat a-lot of boiled frozen broccoli and boiled organic or re-washed and re-boiled canned spinach with a vinaigrette of organic sugar with glass_bottled_cider_vinegar. The glassware is because of some friends that got lupus from eating too much plastic stuff, or inhaling it since they were house painters who used vinyl paints. The nutritional DV numbers that I now eat are three times what most others in my family are eating every day. I keep at about 100% and they are about 25 to 33%, but they are all morbidly obese diabetics. Even though I was once morbidly obese myself and had a heart attack from too many carbs for too long, (which I think gave me all the symptoms of beriberi, scurvy and pellagra, along with the beginnings of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease), I am now more fit in comparison to most others I know.I hope you have learned something from my ‘mistakes’ that will soon help you along your way.<><My best to you and for your good health,A1[(-:]PS1 – I currently feel that what Dr. Fuhrman MD teaches is the best nutritional information available in the nation.http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/cat-low-carb-high-protein.html http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2627/2 http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=43http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ PS2 – Boiling spinach can reduce the pesticides from 80 to 95%+ as per canning studies done in the 70’s, by boiling the pesticides off with the steam – after boiling it long enough to pull the pesticides out of the plant. Boiling also reduces the hundreds of percents of acid carbs, like folic acid, that makes eating a lot of raw spinach not digest easily and it would sometimes cause loose stools, and also breaks it down a first step so it is then easier to digest in the stomach. It also kills any bacteria or e-coli problems that may have somehow been introduced into the raw or commercially canned produce.http://www.foodnews.org/index.php
A: i was onj atkins for 2 months lost 4 dress sizes, but when i stop the diet i gained double
Advice on dieting and losing weight? I have always been chubby.?
Q: OK, I am 22 years old, Im a size 16, i am five four,, and I weigh 200 lbs. I want to lose eighty lbs. I have went on Atkins before and i was very successful, I lost 40 lbs in a month (then i gained it back when I went off it). This is the thing, the biggest thing on me is my stomach. I have always been muscular all over but my belly is not proportional to the rest of me. People come up to me on a regular basis and ask me if I am pregnant or how far along I am. (they ask me this seriously). I have always been a little bit chubby and in the past four years I’ve put on a extra twenty lbs, and now I am a whopping 200 lbs. I live on a 3rd floor apartment and by the time i get up the stairs to my apartment I am trying to catch my breath. I am way too young to be feeling this way and I know I need to lose the weight. I know that permanent weight loss has to do w/real change, change you can actually do, like no crazy starvation diets or anything like that. Here is what I know about weight loss:Stop eating at 7 or 8 pm.Drink water.Exercise half an hour a day. (?)Cut out fried foods/salty foods/sweetsEat slowly and drink lots of water in between bites. thats pretty much what i know. there are all kinds of horrible diseases that run in my family, like diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, etc, and I want to avoid them, and I know I’ll be more successful in doing that if I just lose this extra weight. the weight im supposed to be for my age and heighth, is 140 lbs. i just want to be healthy, really. I want to be able to take a run and not fall out on the ground gasping. I also feel like guys dont look at me b/c I am fat, b/c of my gut. Its like whatever I eat seems to go right to my gut. I also have extremely large breasts, a big butt, and I could lose some off my inner thighs. Most people only guess that i weigh around 160, but I really want to lose this weight. So my question, what is a good way to go to lose weight? I was thinking about eating only salad, grilled chicken, and vegtables and fruits. Honestly Ive always had a distorted image of what food should be. I started binging a few years ago and Ive never stopped, like i will go into the kitchen and eat and eat and eat. I dont throw it up, but I am definitely not hungry while I am having this eating fests. I have an oral fixation, its like i always have to have something in my mouth or something to drink or chew, like gum or candy. I really thought that by age 22 Id have lost this baby weight. I appreciate any advice you all have for me.and one more thing, I feel like i gained the last twenty lbs of this weight by eating fast food all the time. ive been w/my boyfriend four years and he goes out to eat 3 times a day everyday. Now we hardly ever go out to eat, we eat in all the time, a lot of Stoffers Lasagna dinners, chicken wings, pizza, browinies, soda, hamburgers and hot dogs. I know this diet is terrible and obiviously not working. Is it unrealistic to make a goal to lose 100 lbs? for my heighth? I am 5 4.
A: One thing you mentioned is that you feel like you always have to be either eating or drinking something. You obviously have to eat, but when you’re not having a meal, why not try drinking more water? Maybe you can keep a water bottle with you at all times, so when you’re feeling hungry and you know you’re going to be having breakfast, lunch, or dinner soon, you can fill up on water and save the calories you would have eaten. If you don’t like the taste of water, try flavored water or vitamin water, or you can put a lemon or lime with it to give it flavor. The stairs leading to your apartment can actually help you lose weight without making you go to the gym, if you think about it. You can try walking up and down those stairs for a few times a week outside of when you actually need to use them to begin with, and gradually increase the number to every day. When you feel comfortable enough (and this may not be for a while, but when it does happen, you’ll be proud of yourself), you can start running up and down the stairs every day.Another thing you can do is try to walk more when you can. Park farther away from stores in the parking lot so you’ll have to walk a greater distance, and walk whenever an errand is fewer than one mile away from your apartment if possible. Whenever you’re bored and want to eat food, take a walk around the block to erase your boredom, or even walk around your apartment. As for when you eat and you’re not hungry, put a post-it note on your refrigerator saying something like, “Are you sure you’re hungry?” That will get you to think twice before you open it up and eat. Also, write down everything you eat. That way, you know exactly what you’re eating — and how much of it — and you’ll know what you need to cut down. You should also write down when you excercise and how much.Another thing you can do is join an exercise class at a gym. Do something that sounds interesting to you, and stick with it — don’t just do something that sounds like it will help you lose weight, do something that sounds like fun. Getting your boyfriend to do the class with you might benefit you both: it’ll give you the support you need to know you’re not doing it alone, and it might help him get into shape if he’s out of shape. If you’re low on money and aren’t sure you can afford to join a class, maybe you can buy some exercise DVDs and exercise with them at home. They may feel corny at first, and you may feel like you look rediculous doing the exercises, but they can actually really help. One obvious thing you need to do: start eating healthy. It’s good that you and your boyfriend have started eating at home again, but you need to really think about what you’re eating. Make a conscious effort to buy healthier food at the grocery store, and make a list beforehand and stick to it so you don’t end up buying unhealthy foods. While I do think it would be good for you to lose weight, I don’t think you need to lose 100 pounds. I think 60-75 pounds would be a more realistic goal, but you can figure it out as you go along. Instead of thinking to yourself that you have to lose 60 pounds, it might be easier to make smaller goals on the way. For example, make a goal to lose ten pounds first, and once you lose that, you can go from there. Reward yourself after your small goals to motivate yourself, and once you feel you’re at a good weight for yourself, you can give yourself an even bigger reward!I hope this helps, and good luck with your weight loss 🙂
Was this situation unfair? Should I have been blamed?
Q: Well, here’s my story. I used to be in foster care. My twin sister had sex with a 17-yr. old guy, who was a foster child of the foster mom’s sister, @ age 14, & 1 of the foster sisters had sex @ 18, but with a 15-yr. old boy. So, the foster mom got mad @ ME because both sexual incidents were like 3 days apart.I can’t really report what I didn’t see happening. I was either in my bedroom or taking a shower. Most of the time, people don’t believe you when you report he-said/she-said bullshit. So, the foster mom’s mother (foster grandma) was in the hospital on her death bed, battling cancer (colon & ovary). The foster mom STILL blames ME ’til this DAY!, that she couldn’t say her last words to her mom.Ever since, the WHOLE family lost respect for me & treated me like trash. & my relationships with EVERYONE went downhill! Even in school. Even with my twin sister. They were bragging about having sex, & what made me tell on them, is because they were threatening to beat me up. & these stinky neighbors, who hiked up the sexual acts, were ALSO threatening me. I was really afraid because they were like my age, & fight like MEN! They show NO mercy when whipping your ass.The foster mom expected me to tell earlier. Tell WHEN it happened. How could I have told if I had no way of contacting her, & no one had cellphones? They were gone the whole 3 days, which was understandable. This was the 1st time something like this happened. Do you REALLY expect a 14-yr. old to be responsible for what an 18-yr. old has done? If I report something I didn’t see for myself, people won’t take my word for it.I thought they were just BRAGGING because 4 yrs. before that, the foster sister bragged to everyone, saying she was pregnant. Come to find out, she wasn’t. I guess she felt she HAD to start a false rumor about herself, just to fit in with the crowd & make friends. That time, she was 14 & in Jr. High. Even when I was in Jr. high, many girls were pregnant, & I had NO friends & got bullied because I was the nerdy virgin. So, 4 yrs. later, when WE were 14, I thought they were just bragging & lying. & I thought my twin sister was just following in her footsteps. My twin sister waited until AFTER she got in trouble to report the 17-yr. old for rape. Boy went to jail, & he didn’t rape her. It was consensual. & they bragged about doing it 5 times. Foster sister ALMOST went to jail since HER guy was 15.The foster sister’s brother had sex around that time, too (time of granny’s death). He was 19, & the girl was 16. Tell me how he didn’t get in trouble.I didn’t have sex at all. I was still a virgin. As I said, I didn’t see what happened. There’s more to this story, but I can’t say it here.I’m now 25, along with my twin. & the foster sister is like 29. My twin sister convinced the WHOLE world to hate me, even our biological family after we turned 18 & met them for the 1st time. THEY don’t even have any respect for me! They treat me WORSE than garbage! I have to feel bad about this ’til this day. Everyone I know looks down on me. Family or not.So I have to live with this false guilt & baggage for the REST of my life!
A: No you don’t have to live with this for the rest of your life. Realize that we can only ALLOW people to make us feel guilty when we KNOW we’re innocent. Look at it this way….the people having sex did so on their own accord…you didn’t suggest or force them to have sex. With that knowledge you know that you did nothing wrong and that unfortunately you’re trapped within a family of small minds and finger pointers that want to take the burden of the guilt and smack it down on the first available victim that will allow it.Stop being a doormat….tell yourself “I am NOT guilty, have done NOTHING wrong and won’t allow myself to be a victim anymore”. Also tell the family this…whether they want to hear it or not. Don’t argue the details any longer, that only gives them the opportunity to keep this going. State how things are and move on from there.Much luck! 🙂
