Are there dangers from making alcohol by fermenting sugar with yeast?
Q: I am doing an experiment by fermenting sugar and fruit punch juice with rapid rise highly active bread yeast. I have a few questions. First, will this process have a chance of making methanol instead of ethanol? I do not want to drink it if it could.Second question. If it is possible to make methanol by fermenting sugar and fruit punch, how would you tell if it did make methanol? How could you tell if it made safely made ethanol, so i can safely drink it?Third. I know not to distill my creation, but when i filter it (through a flour sifter and coffee filters to get the yeast out) will i be able to safely let it sit and age without worrying about it separating into dangerous alcohol? If it separated wouldn’t that be like distilling the alcohol?Thank you for your help.
A: No danger. Fermenting sugar with yeast will not yield methanol. You will be drinking ethanol, the only danger is based on quantity, if you drink more than you should…you know the results. You will not need to test the result to see if it is methanol, it won’t be. Finally after filtering you can still let it age without a “separation fear”. I used to make my own beer and the couple weeks of aging after the first few filtering steps is what made it so smooth and drinkable.
