Legally what can be done about terrible back yard breeders?
Q: I want to know what can be legally done to bring down terrible back yard breeders. I have been a volunteer at a shelter for many years and it sickens me at how many dogs are in the shelter and how sickening it is seeing all these posting offering dogs for studding or just these huge amounts of puppies that they have abundances of and need homes for them. my neighbor intentionally breeds inbred dogs because that’s all they have and I even offered to get there dogs fixed free of charge, they said “yea that sounds good the female is pregnant with her dads puppies right now but when she has them we will fix the male and breed her again with her son”. So I asked them if they were worried about the defects they would cause the puppies, they didn’t care and even said only inbred people come out retarded. I just walked away at that point hoping there is something I can do to help protect these dogs. I want to know if i can call animal control and they can do something. they have already had animal control out before for beating there dogs in which animal control did nothing and they found out who called them the first time and threatened them and harassed them constantly. Also can you report for over breeding a male dog. they have a 4 year old cocker spaniel that has intentionally had over 10 litters with other dogs. I am in riverside county in California. I know I could call myself but I know they are busy. Thank you for all your help
A: This person is unethical, but nothing you have said is illegal.Hopefully you live in a state with puppy lemon laws and he gets sued by one of his buyers.ADDEDIn most states, there’s NO “licence to breed” There are KENNEL LICENCES, but that’s not the same thing. A Kennel Licence allows for you to have more than a certain number of dogs.. here in most counties in OH you need a Kennel Licence if you have 5 or more dogs. Its not a “breeding licence”.
I am a New Dog breeder Please HELP!!!?
Q: Ok before you jump all over me like others DON”T worry I am a BRAND new registered breeder, and I come from a Family of breeders (well actually stud services). My Mini Aussie just had her first litter in March 7 beautiful healthy puppies. I have a few questions,#1 My Female has gained a lot of weight since the pups and I was wondering if that is normal? I havent came across that or really even reaserched it yet, so I thought I would ask first. I have an appt with the vet but its not for 2 weeks.#2 What is a good way to keep my Male away from her during her next heat? I have read lots of ideas but these 2 dogs are attached to eachother hips and will dig at carpet, dirt, doors, whine, bark, ect DO ANYTHING to get to eachother (mind you they are both extremly smart and have somehow figured out ways to get out of crates and they both know how to unlock our gates and doors and open them all) thats the only downfall with having smart dogs i guess they are too smart for thier own good! its MAJOR puppy love as i like to say,#3 As I know, it is not good for her to become pregnant her next heat however, I love this dog more than anyone will ever know (she saved my life literally) if somehow my male gets to her and she does become pregnant, what is the ABSOLUTE best way to ensure her health and her puppies health, I have read so much on this but I just do not feel like I have had found the best answers. I know there is a shot to ensure she does not get pregnant but I do not like the idea. NO I am NOT going to Fix her or the Male, I payed a lot of money to try and improve this breed and find the best dogs I could have possibly found.#4 Since I am new to breeding and I have only had one litter, For my future litters what is the best way to overcome a death of a puppy if one should not make it? I worry about this and it hasn’t even happened to me…I just cannot bare the death of animals but I knew that there was the possiblity when I entered this field I just want to prepare myself to fullest. As you can tell I am a worrier. I hate not knowing everything to every possibility. I am asking these questions to more experienced breeders! I am in a breeding club but they are not very nice to newcombers and I honestly thinks its because they think I am competition? I am not trying to compete with anyone! Its not like I planned to have 2 puppies from my litter in movies, one in a hearding magazine and a full waiting list that is full of the owners from my first litter??????? Like I TRIED to say Please DO NOT patronize me for being a NEW breeder! Everyone learns from experience, which I am tryin to gain as every day goes by. By the way I am in the process of starting a Mini Aussie Rescue Center with my Family Out here In California, If anyone knows good contacts to have Please let me know! Thank you, and Thank You to the people that are actually answering my question and trusting that I am doing this for the good part of breeding and making sure I know every detail to ensure positive, safe, and healthy breeding!
A: Why don’t you go back to the breeder you bought your bit*ch from and ask them these questions. Many years ago I had a Belgian Shepherd Groenendael bit*ch (Australian Champion but Obedience titles) who had a lot to offer the breed, particularly in those early days, which I did plan to breed. Her breeders were the ones that I turned to for advise and assistance in choosing an appropriate stud dog, etc. She never did have that litter cos she came into season too late.Anyway, any reputable breeder worth their salt will be only too happy to assist you with you on-breeding one of their pups.As you are such a worrier I can only assume that both your dogs have been tested for all the relevant breed-related genetic diseases prior to your mating them. I also assume that you have a waiting list of potential puppy homes for your current litter. As for preventing a litter on her next couple of seasons, (I’m sure you don’t want to breed her too often as you wouldn’t want to do anything that wasn’t in your bit*ch’s best interests) there is a contraceptive for male dogs which is effective for either 6 or 12 months. Here is a link: http://www.peptech.com/HTML/Animal_Health/Superlorin_general.htmlIt is available in Aus and Europe. Don’t know if it is available where you are.I do hope that you will be a reputable breeder and the following link may help you to determine if you are:http://dogplay.com/GettingDog/checklist.html
Maremma Sheep Dog experts please?!?!?!(looongggg!!!)?
Q: Before I go further, Buddy is going to the vet’s first thing tomorrow, but if people have read my questions refering to the kitten that the vet put on steriods, you may see my reluctance and understand why I am posting on here. Another thing, too, Tilly(staffyXboxer) is my dog, Buddy(maremma) is my sister’s. I’m asking on here for her as she lives in a household where there is a lineup literally for the computer, whereas my partner and I own a laptop, so it’s just easier this way, but she cares about him sooo very much(hence the vet trip tomorrow). She was also the person who the kitten belonged to, She chose Falcon(the kitten) out of my litter of 5, and was the one who took Falcon to the vet’s. I just once again posted the questions on here! Hope that explains everything, here’s Buddy’s problem, if anyone can give us any info, it would be fantastic…Chronologiical order from points of where we suspect it started:*Buddy ended up in the pound for ”protecting”(this is what maremmas are bred to do, so please understand) his friend, Roxy, who escaped out of the property. Buddy loyally followed his friend, which got him into strife.*We go and pick Buddy up from pound, but as Roxy is my sister’s partner’s family dog, we don’t take her home.*The family goes and picks Roxy up the next day, Buddy and Roxy reunited.*Roxy escapes the newly fixed fences, gets a new home with family friends, is doing sooo much better now!!!*Buddy gets taken on a trip for a hydrobathThen…*Buddy starts to loose hair. First from around his eyes and mouth and chest.*Then it moves down his back.*We try Malaseb, as instructed by our grandfather(registered dog breeder)*Nothing. If anything, it falls out more. *We then take him to the vet. $150 later, he is on a 4 week antibiotic trial(can ask sister for the name of the drug if need be) and has had a steroid shot(no tests have been done, the vet just prescribes them).*Works for the first 2 weeks, then it came back really bad, now the hair is falling off of his tail and tummy.*Find a ”food powder” online(can get the name of it from sister, but please, i think we got this product too late, so it is no fault to the people who make and sell it, they did their best in trying to help) that says ”guaranteed to stop itching”. Have been trying that for the past 3 weeks, to no avail. As with flea treatments. Thinking of trying a food elimination test for food alergins, but would rather find out right now what it is rather then just keep guessing.*Buddy has now got really, really, REALLY bad conjunctivitis, so bad his eyes are getting clogged and stuck. We are cleaning them out every hour, and they seem to get better, but his left eye looks cloudy(fearing blindness). We clean his eyes out with eye wash and warm water and a cloth. So my questions are… Wtf is causing this? Has anyone ever had this, even with any other breed of dog? Buddy is:*A purebreed*Approx. 10 months(will have to ask my sister for sure)*is up to date with his shotsHow do we treat whatever it is?How do I polietly demand that this dog gets a skin scraping test/fecal matter test/blood test, to determine the cause(the first time we saw the vet, she acted like it was a ”case closed” sort of thing and pushed us out of the door before we could respond. And she didn’t tell us the cost before filling out a prescription or giving Buddy the injection, the price wouldn’t have mattered, but we would have liked to have been told)Things we think it could be:*Stress*Being really sensitive*Mange*An allergy to fleas/plants/seasonal changePlease, if you need any more info, just ask, this poor boy is going downhill, he still eats, and plays, and poops and wees, but he just looks sooo depressed at times, and is practically scratching himself bald!!!! All the things above have happened in a space of about 4 months, and this will be his second trip to the vet in this time, so please, i think we have exhausted all other options. Also, we waited a week before moving onto another option to give his body a break and see if it had worked, so it couldn’t be a build up of products or stuff like that. Thank you in advance for any info, it would be greatly appreciated!!!P.S Have researched conjunctivitis, know all of the causes and all, if he only had that, we wouldn’t be so worried, as it is easily treatable when detected early(yellow discharge from eyes). It is the fact that it has happened during this hairloss stage that he has it, so maybe hinting more at an alergin? And where he is lossing hair, he has big pus sy patches that look really painful, and this has only just started happening, whereas before he was just really red and irritated. Caused by itching? Or by Infection?Again, thank you. What is a “hydrobath”? The commercial way to bath your dog. Shampoo, conditioner, flea and tick treatment, rinse then blow dry. All different to his normal bath, was used as a ”treat”, is another of our suspisions, but he only had one and that was before he got all these symptoms. What is the powdered supplement he is on? Website with ingredients? Will ad this when i have asked. What was the antibiotic he was on? What dose? What does he weigh? Will ad this when i have asked. What is this dog being fed? Not only main food, but treats, extras, things he steals, things the neighbors give him, etc. He is fed V.I.P raw mince(kangaroo), Pedigree Beef and Vegetable Biscuits, White Grain Rice plus raw chicken carcases and bones. Lives on acerage, so neighbours not a problem. Bones are his treats. Is any of this new within the last four months? The conjunctivitis, the hair loss along his tummy and tail, and the puss. The places that he cannot reach to scratch (like the front of his chest)… what does the skin look like? Any redness, bumps, anything besides hair loss? Redness, bumps and yellow discharge, and he can reach the front of his chest with his back paws. And no, not cooked bones, raw. We know the dangers! The hydrobath was at a car wash, it was one of those special ones for dogs, so not sure of the products, but all the foam and everything was washed out, we made sure his fur didn’t froth up with soap, and he was blow dried afterwards. Yet again, though, we haven’t taken him back since. At worst the reaction would have lasted a month, maybe 2 and we would at least see some improvement!!!Thank you for those questions, though, made me think of the things i didn’t write on here.
A: Aside from your own thoughts on this, i would add not overlooking an auto immune issue although certainly i’m more suspicious of mange or allergies. Also, while the dog is extremely young, thyroid comes to mind. I have heard cases of young dogs getting low thyroid which will cause excessive hair loss. As to the vet, you are the person paying the bills, you should be able to request any type of testing you want (skin scraping etc). If any vet gave me any pushback i’d walk out of their office and find someone else. As an owner we have an obligation to watch out for our pets and not just blindly follow what a vet thinks. The requests you’re looking for seem extremely reasonable and i’d find a vet who’s responsive and truly cares about the dog and the person paying the bills.
