My Golden’s Biopsy Came Back Cancer… BUT after surgery, the pathologist says there are no signs of cancer ?
Q: OK, we are confused! A needle biopsy deemed our dog to have a stage 1 Mxyosarcoma soft tisuue tumor in the muscles of her back. We underwent an aggressive surgery to remove the mass. We anxiously waited to resuts to see we got clean margins, but the same pathologist found NO signs of ANY cancer! We are upset to put our pet through such an extreme procedure when she didn’t need it. We don’t know what to believe (the first biopsy or the extraction results). The oncologist said, this is extremely rare for a wrong positive biopsy but it does happen. What is the margin of error on biopsys? Anyone know?
A: My only experience with cancer is in humans and there are times when a biopsy is done it removes the tumor completely so that when surgery is done there are no signs of cancer. Margins cannot be evaluated on biopsies so it is impossible for the pathologist to know this. However, I have not seen this happen with a sarcoma. The only time I have ever seen a biopsy that was wrong only the histology, or type of cancer, was incorrect. I have never seen one that was positive for cancer when in fact it was not. In human pathology labs anytime the doctor sees cancer it is always checked by another pathologist to be sure the findings are correct. I don’t have any explanation for your situation. I know how upsetting this is for you, but I’m glad your baby is okay.

I have a 2 year old golden retriever with a lump the size of a pea on his back. Could this be cancer?
Q: I just noticed the hard pea-sized lump today and of course i started freaking out and crying because my retriever book stated this might be an early sign of cancer. If it is cancer, what kind of cancer can it be? What are my options in treating him? He is so young and i want to be prepared for when i see the vet.
A: It is quite common for Goldens to have lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and also cysts on their back. The cyst may need draining or might need no treatment at all. A lipoma usually needs no treatment. Next time you see your vet have him evaluate the lumps but unless the dog is acting odd you do not have a health emergency.
