We were each given a piece of galvanized steel (iron coated with a very thin layer of zinc to protect against rusting) and we were instructed to calculate the number of atoms deep the zinc coating was. We started by weighing the galvanized steel and measuring its dimensions. We then dissolved the zinc from the iron by submerging it in a solution of hydrochloric acid. Q: My daughter is doing a scince project for school. It is the battery potatoe thing but a little different. She is trying all types of friuts and vegetables, but i have no clue as to where I can buy zinc and cooper electrodes. Does anyone have any suggestions or any ideas that may help her?
A: This is EASY. Go to a big box home improvement store. Get heavy gage house wire (12 or 10 gage solid) from the electrical department. Have them pull you some by the foot and get five feet or so. House wiring is made of copper. Next head over to the hardware department. Find some zinc coated nails. Use those as electrodes. The demo I like to do is to take an LCD clock and hook it to a potato battery. It also works with soda, oranges, plants, etc.

A: dry cells..like d size batteries are enclosed in a zinc can. Just use a saw and cut a d cell open…..scoop out the paste thats inside and wash the outer metal( it’s zinc). Be careful, it’s sharp.for copper you can use house wiring stripping the insulation off. Or, metal shops, hardware stores, etc, should have copper flashing. It is commonly used as an ornament on roofs.
