Q: help please I’ve had my braces for over 4 years and I’m 16 years old. A: You’re right. You’re dentist is not an orthodentist. An orthodentist is also not a dentist. An oral surgeon is a perodentist.You need to talk to your parents about this. A dental hygenist and oral surgeon are not qualified or legally allowed to adjust your braces like that. If this is the only person you are seeing something is wrong. If your parents tell you not to worry talk to somebody else in the office. If nothing happens, talk to a counselor at school or something about your worries. As bad as it sounds if your parents know that this person is not qualified than it is neglect and abuse.Your front teeth sound like they need to be filed. Braces won’t fix that.Extraction is necessary if your mouth is crowded. That is normally done before braces are put on.

Dentist and Orthodontist?

Q: Im only in High School,but I’ve questioned much about a career in the Dental Fields.Is it possible to be a Dentist and Orthodontist at the same time? i know, that basically Orthodontists are already Dentists but have more knowledge by specializing in orthodontics. What i really mean is. Is it possible to own my own practice as an Orthodontist and Dentist.Would this be difficult, as in busy-wise?Would i be able to keep up the pace on my own?Should i own a practice with a partner, why or why not?Would i generally get payed much more by having a practice which offers Dentistry and Orthodontics?I know i really will enjoy both of these jobs entirely, but i dont want to have to chose over one career. i really want give people both Dentistry and Orthodontics at the same time.if someone could please answer every one of my questions, i will learn another few new thing ill be greatful of knowing, thanks.

A: I have seen general dentists that do ortho (which they can legally do as long as they don’t advertise themselves as “specialists”) however I don’t think that I have ever heard of an orthodontist that also does general dentistry. I don’t think that an orthodontist would want to do general dentistry if they took the extra time and money spent to become an orthodontist. So if you become a general dentist then you can still do orthodontics. This is part of dental school, however for the really tough cases eg. surgery, major occlusion problems etc. then an orthodontist is the one that you want to see. Can it be done? I am sure it can if you decide that you want to wear roller skates, or if you can be two places at once. Being the best at something requires it’s full attention. I am sure that there are orthodontists that also do general dentistry. There are dentists that do orthodontics. Now that I think about it I do know a person that does orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry. There you have it, I guess it can be done. On paper having both types of services sounds great, kinda like “one stop shopping” however being an orthodontist you can have twelve patients at a time, versus one or two where you are working on a tooth personally. Many orthodontists work out of several rooms, sometimes a big single room with ten chairs set up. They supervise the treatment, that is they diagnose the type of ortho needed, cement the brackets etc. However orthodontists use orthodontic assistants that do much of the work, such as changing bands, removing extra cement, etc. So while there is much overhead, they can also be seeing quite a few patients by overseeing what their assistants are doing. Sounds like a winner to me.

Q: My kid went to this dentist who falsely claimed herself an orthodontist for orthodontist treatment. After a year treatment from her, we moved to San Diego where we decided to find an new orthodontist nearby. long story short, we found out that she didn’t give proper treatment to my kid, we even went through to find second opionion, and both orthodontists we consulted told same things, and they showed us the roots of the teeth go different directions instead of being straight… I have paid her about $4000 so far, and the new othodontist is charging us almost $7000 as to take off all the old misplaced braises and put on new set, and he simply told us, it s a start all over again treatment, and will take full 2 years… I can’t believe a dentist out there will be so irresponsible that my kids would have under her melpractice and would have finished his treatment there without knowing anything wrong, if we did move… when I told her that we re moving, she simply told us to continue to drive back to her without any concern or assistance, and when I upfront to her after consulting the new orthodontist, she hung up the phone, and said she will talk to his lawyer and will send my new othodontist a letter request of prove…anyway, my kid has wasted a whole year, not to mention the money we paid to this quake orthodontist and money we will have to pay for the start all over treatment to our new orthodontist, it s hard and painful for him to go through it all over again…please help…

A: I would first contact your state’s medical licensing board and file a complaint against your first dentist/orthodentist or whatever she claimed to be. I don’t believe this would be considered a “small” claim worthy of small claims court. I would go find myself a medical malpractice attorney (a real shark) and speak with them. It’s possible you have a valid claim for malpractice that could be worth far more than what you’ve already spent. Most med-mal attorneys work on contingency bases anyway, so if you win, he gets paid. The higher the amount, the smaller the percentage taken by the attorney.You might also, if that idea doesn’t appeal to you, have a claim for a tort against the dentist for an assault on your child. That’s another possibility you might want to explore.
