You might say that a bodybuilder or someone with overdeveloped muscles in their arms from using a wheelchair demonstrates hypertrophy, but in a pathological sense, you can also see hypertrophy in muscles in children with muscular dystrophy (getting to that). That happens because of repeated damage to the muscle cells; as long as the body can, it will try to compensate by increasing the size of the remaining cells.Dystrophy means any condition associated with abnormal development. It can be due to malnutrition or to genetic disorders like Duchenne or Becker’s muscular dystrophy.Hyper- and hypotonia are, respectively, increase and decrease in overall muscle tone. A: All of the terms you mentioned have greek prefixes and root words. Once you learn the meaning of a few terms you can mix and match the prefix, root and suffix to figure out what a similar terms mean. A = “lack of” or “without” Hyper = “above” or “excess” Hypo = “below” or “lacking” Dys = “bad” or “incorrect” trophy = “growth” or “development”tonia = literally “tone” Put the prefix with the root and you get: Atrophy = Loss or degeneration of muscle massHypertrophy = Growth or increase of muscle massDystrophy = “Bad muscles” defining symptom of a genetic disease Hypertonia = Excess muscle tone (tightness)Hypotonia = Lack of muscle tone (weakness)Obviously there’s more to the specific definitions, symtoms and such but that’s the basics. Now you know the key to learning many many anatomical and medical terms. Just learn a couple dozen greek terms and you can decode hundreds of terms the same way.
