A War Torn Decade

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the Afghanistan war. Scores of Soldiers have lost their lives, and thousands of civilians have been killed and about a trillion dollars has been spent on this war. The Original goals of the war were to catch Bin Laden dead or alive, and purge the small South Central Asian nation of Al Qaeda, both of which have been accomplished. So, Why are we still there? Are we still their? To nation build , like both Bush and Obama both said what weren’t going to do? Are we there to overthrow the Taliban, A job that the previous commander of the war, General Mc Chrystal said was nearly impossible to Achieve? Or, is the Trillions of dollars worth of steel under Afghanistan the reason for staying?
Regardless of the what the reasoning for staying in the war is, A majority of American soldiers and civilians think the war needs to end. This war has not just been long, It has become the longest war in American history. I’m angry at the fact that we have achieved the goals of the war, yet Our politicians say that we still have a long road ahead. A long Road Ahead? Longer than 10 years. The nation is in financial chaos and they want to perpetuate one of the wars that bankrupted this Country? That is ridiculous. What are we looking at, 10 more years, 20 more years? Our politicians forget that in this country we don’t work for them, they work for us! The people have spoken, end the war now. Mission accomplished. Time to get out of dodge.
The Armed Forces are to be used for defense. They are not pawns to be used for political gains. If we go into another country and drop bombs on them it is not self defense, it’s an invasion. In the last 10 years we have witnessed our nation do terrible things, some that defied international law and some that violated the constitution. All of these things are moral. America tries to put on this image that we are the good guys, but we haven’t been behaving like good guys. Not in the past 10 years , and not in the past 30 years, as it was our behavior that was the motivation for the September 11th attacks. Instead of changing our behavior for the better, our government has used 9/11 as an excuse to commit many unspeakable acts. Its time to end this war now!
