Coconut Milk

After recently deciding to make some life changes, what I eat and drink came into play as the most serious changes next to exercise. We all need milk for the calcium that it provides but I hate cow’s milk so I recently started drinking Almond milk which is a great alternative to cow’s milk. Almond milk is full of calcium and other minerals with fewer calories than cow’s milk, but what about coconut milk?

After looking for nutritious and calorie wise meals, I kept coming across coconut milk in the recipes. So why is coconut milk so good that it makes the recipe list for nutritional and calorie friendly foods?

· Only 50 calories per cup! That is half of the calories that cow’s milk has and fewer than almond milk, which has about 70 per cup.

· Only 5 grams of saturated fat, 0 cholesterol, and only 1 gram of carbohydrates. The fat in coconut milk contains “approximately 65% medium chain fatty acids”.

· It is packed with Vitamins A, D, C and B12, calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, selenium and zinc.

· Soy and dairy free.

“SO Delicious” is the brand that I tried. I guess I was expecting a very coconut flavor but was shocked to discover that it did not taste like coconut at all. Coconut milk is very white in color, a little thick and tastes very plain, almost like watered down milk. There really is no flavor. This is not bad for people like me who cannot stand the taste of cow’s milk.

You can use coconut milk for your smoothies, cereal, and coffee as well as in your favorite recipes as a substitute for cow’s milk. If you are looking for a healthier alternative to cow’s milk, which can be full of preservatives and hormones, or if you are severely allergic to dairy and soy, give coconut milk a try and see if it is for you.
